  • ATF oil change

    Hi Guys,

Need some help, i want to change the auto transmission fuel or oil on my 1993 Surf, anybody tell me how i would go about that? I have changed engine oil before on it and that was easy but im lost with the Auto gear box oil.

I know where the nut is but where do i put the new oil inside? How much do i use?

Hope you guys can help, its a 1993 import SSRX 2.8TD surf.

you'll only change about half the ATF this way but drain the ATF and using a funnel pour the same quantity back in through the ATF dipstick (about 5L )
Alternatively search for the two bucket method on here.

No it won't all come out - I had a quick search for two bucket method and can't find it either!

The idea is: take off both the pipes going to the ATF cooler part of rad

one side will suck atf up the other will pump out when engine is turned over, work out which is which and using two buckets, one empty (to catch waste atf) and one full of brand new atf turn the engine over - this will pump out old atf while simultaneously refiling the auto box. It takes about 10-15 litres.

Its best if you keep it simple in my opinion. Drain the ATF from the drain plug and you will get about 4.5l out. Top up 4.5 litres via the dipstick tube.
I do this at every service and although you only get about half the fluid out this way it dilutes whats in there and keeps it fresh.
Have a look at the colour of whats in and see how it compares with new. If its broadly similar in appearance, this method is fine. If the stuff thats in looks black/burnt and badly degraded the 2 bucket way changes it all, but if you dont want to do that, just do another drain and fill later on. Youll soon dilute it enough to get it looking good.

Exactly what I do mate, saves all that faffing about & keeps the transmission in tip top condition.
If its not broke don't fix it.

I've done about 3 drain/fills on my tranny since I got the truck, this method works just fine IMO. Make sure you put the same amount back in as what came out (measure what came out), and then read up on the proper way to check the fluid level. You refill via the tranny dipstick, so you'll need a proper funnel for that.
