  • Silly little fairy lights!!

    Hi Guys and gals,

I have Recently purchased a narrow bodied 2.4 td surf (89 on a G) I seem to have a similar problem to a lot of other people on this forum i.e. green and orange dash lights..... Oh god not another one i hear you say!!

The problem I seem to have is that the green turbo light comes on when turning the ignition on then once the engine is running and being driven at any speed regardless of rpm the light does not come on?? I'm not to bothered as it seems to pull fairly well and whistles away nicely but the power does seem to peak at about 2800 rpm although it will carry on reving past that all the way to the rev limiter but with not enough torque to pull the skin of a rice pudding!!

    Is this normal??

Also the pretty little orange light does not seem to do anything except give a very dim glow which is just visible at night with the lights turned off. I'm pretty sure thats supposed to come on when you turn the ignition on and then go out and stay out while the car is running/being driven??

I have checked the vast amount of hoses and connections to the many sensors located around the boost sensor and no splits or breaks in wires, also I have checked that they are all correctly connected. And I have checked the larger hoses coming from the turbo to the inlet manifold and all seems well.

I am going to try shorting the dianostics plug tomorrow and see if I get any flashes from the dashboard, although I don't think I will get any joy as the light doesn't seem to work properly anyway.... Also I'm going to try disconecting the battery to see if that resets anything apart from the clock and loosing the preset radio 2 on the stereo (should improve it straight away)

I was just wondering if any of you surfing experts had ever come across any similar problems with your vehicles and if so could throw me a bit of advice.

Apart from the horrible noise I get on a full lock, left or right which I am going to tackle with a smear of grease tomorrow I am really pleased with it and everything else seems to work fine (touch wood)

Any advice will be much appreciated.

P.S. Does anyone else get the trouble with the Cd player spitting the Cd's back out at you every time you shove one in?

    Cheers Guys and Gals

Hi mate where about in Somerset are you? I'm in Taunton.
Can't help much i'm afraid but your right about the green Turbo light it should come on when booted around 1800rpm. The orange light you mentioned does it say CHECK underneath? If so that is to do with the engine and shoud be looked at immediately. Greenshields in Wellington are 4x4 experts mainly Landys give them a try 01823 663409. I trust them they are very helpful. Hope it works out for you.............muncher

      Nice one muncher,

I'm going to have another fiddle (with the car that is) and if I have no joy I will give them a call. Oh and I'm in Frome, about 50 miles away I think.

      Cheers Rob

If yours is the original Toyota radio then it's probably b----ered; mine was but dealer put in a nice new one for me. I've had a look at my Haynes manual but can't see a wiring diagram in it to identify the circuit your lights are linked to, otherwise I might have found something for you. Sorry about that.
