I've just read the fault codes and got 8, Intake air temperature sensor. No worries with this as i know it wants replacing, the other one is code 12, Timer Control Valve. now this is the one i need info for if anyone can help

Did you clear the ECU first?

The TCV one and code 11 can sometimes be fixed by replacing the TPS, I have no idea why...
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

Yes i cleared the ecu a couple of weeks ago just to make sure and now the 3rd gen is on the road i can spend some time on the 2nd before it's sold. The TPS was replaced about six weeks back due to a fault, but it was a S/H unit so i suppose it could have failed again

As Andy says, the TPS being faulty can screw with timing setting, but I'd start with what the fault codes say first, then try more random things after.

Timer control valve is in the bottom of the fuel pump, but it is a fault code that is often hard to nail down.

Fix your temp sensor too, the ECU alters fueling depending on air temps, as colder air is denser than hot so this also could be messing things up.

Hi tony, the TCV was something i hadn't come across before, most of the EFI systems i'm used to are petrol, so i was a bit confused as to what it was and it's purpose, Anyway do you have a TPS available that is working as it should mate please? If so how much will i have to hit the bank manager for?

I have a good TPS on the current breaker truck. PM me your address if you want it, I don't mind you trying it first if you just cover postage both ways if you don't want it.

The timer control valve adjusts the fuel timing, much like the advancing the ignition in a petrol car as revs increase.

Non EFI deisels use counterweights in the pump, EFI pumps use engine, air and fuel temp,TPS, RPM, and crank position get ideal fuel timing. The ECU is pretty good at working out which sensor is duff, but sometimes it gets misleading info from an iffy sensor and its not the right fault code as Albannach found.

How's the timing belt? TCV fault can be caused by incorrect timing from a worn belt, that has skipped a tooth or two.

                  Hi Nev
I checked the belt about eight months ago when the IP was changed, the belt was fitted in november 2009 and was looking in good order, the tensioner and idler were smooth in operation ie no roughness or play in either, they looked to have been replaced at the same time as the belt. the belt tension was triple checked on assembly and then doubled checked after a few weeks of running around and i found no discernible change in the belt tension, so i presume it was ok
                  cheers
