  • Coolant pressure?

    Hi folks
As back up to my post about curious coolant leak.
Had my rad sorted and refitted, the hoses on the rad are still highly pressured.
The mechs at the garage filled the coolant back up- hopefully without airlocks.
There is no other signs of anything wrong except this high pressure in the hoses.
Does anyone have any info on this? What sort of pressure do others have, what is the pressure supposed to be.
How much resistance on pressing the hose is normal?
What pressure does the rad cap rate and how does this work?

One point I would like to check is that the mechanic reckons that I should run without the stat as he believes this may reduce the pressure in the hoses by allowing a free flow round the system.
Any thoughts or advice would really be appreciated as I want to rule out a warped or cracked head(again) or a porous block.

    Thanks
    Ronnie

I wouldn't run it without a stat, to flow to much water, passes through the rad to quick and dosn't get cooled properly.

The hoses will be hard, cos of the pressure in the system. If you havn't got another truck to compare them with. I wouldn't decide anything just on that alone.

Buy a new cap and a new stat, that way your covered.

If you have excess pressure it will overflow the expansion tank when hot, as it pushes past the cap.

if you look at the radiator cap the pressure should be printed on it.normally 0.9 -1.1bar.1 bar =14.7psi.As far as how hard the pipes should feel at proper pressure its hard to say if your not used to checking.you could try this, pump a bicycle tube to the same pressure on your radiator cap and feel how hard it is.it should give you a rough idea, the radiator hoses will be slightly harder because of the thicker rubber.

Just spent a bit of time reading about the nightmare you had re head, What garage do you use ? Do you rate them?
The labour charge seemed pretty reasonable consideringthe ammaount of time it must have taken!!

i`ve had some similar problems to yoo it seems,my hoses feel pressurised when hot i`ve flushed the system and changed the thermostat and filler cap, just took car on a 300 mile trip with no probs,am thinking pressure is due to it being a sealed system and any probs its gona overflow.

Yeah Reddog you may have a point. My hoses seem less pressurised since taking it on a run of 400miles. It could be I am getting used to the pressure though.
I also believe that if the pressure was radical it would blow into the expansion tank.

Derek, I use Ray at Edenside, Guardbridge. He waffles a bit but is a sound guy and pretty cheap. Hes done alot of work for me on the surf, some of it was serious stuff. He will probably start crying when you show up in a surf. He will mend it though.
I have used Colin aswell. Hes a good guy but always seems too busy. He knows his stuff on Jap motors.
Hows your surf going- I popped in to see Colin recently and he said you were thinking of selling it, any reason in particular or just the usual 500 mechanical snags.
My turbo is now playning up -I think. This may be the last straw, I'll see. It is a good car when working, but the unreliable aspect is getting a bore.

              cheers

selling it was a passing thought, i like the car but like you it seems to be non stop problems ,the more i read on this Forum the more i realise can go wrong with it. Colin has been good and as you say he knows his stuff .
i got a recon turbo through Colin i think it was from Turbo Technics or something like that down south.
                good to hear from you
                cheers
