  • Knocking/tapping noise

I notice that so many times this type of thread keeps coming up and allot of cash is thrown at the problems with no result. Is it the case that these engines are synonymous for this noise?
After checking crank shells, injector testing, timing, fuel pump adjustment, shims, cam, and more I feel that it is time to turn the radio up! I must admit defeat or do a full strip down rebuild but at 70k Im reluctant! If any one has any other ideas please advise, but I think this is one that Mulder and Skully will have to take on!

It's a diesel, and old one at that, live with it.

Seriously, it isn't common at all, one or two or even 10 threads about it dosn't make it a problem in the thousands of members on here.

It's either valve clearances, in which case its not the end of the world, or its worn bearing/pistons in which case you might as well leave it till the motor wears out and you have to do something about it.

Didn't this all start after you fawked up the cam belt? I'd be looking for things related to that.

Nahh The belt was done as not run for 5 years, but it always had this noise, i hoped the correct timing mark might correct it, I think valve could be right as noise goes in about 3 mins as soon as engine is warm basically so I think metal expanding to take up the excess space, I thought this would have been corrected by the shims? or did they do them? MMMMMMmmm

I wouldn't be to worried on an obvious valve shim noise that goes after a few minutes.

Its not unusual, but not common, and correct sized shims should do it, its probably on the larger side of acceptable clearance.

I've only noticed it on 3.0's though, but they are quieter than 2.4's so more noticable.

            problem with fuel pump

I have not been using the surf as when it is cold it is throwing out clouds of black smoke! it is using lots of fuel too! I think it is some thing to do with the fuel pump adjustment under the thimble which i forked about with and have no fkin idea where to turn it back too! can any one tell me the amount of turns from fully in to the approximate setting up of this? many thanks
