  • What's the 2.4 not cracked head milage record?

My 2.4 has no sign of head failure and nothing in it's service record to indicate it's been replaced... What's the record here, for kms before a fail?

I'm on 164,000 ish. (and sweaty palms)

Mine has no signs of rust, but I'm not worried about it falling apart!

Save up and put the money for a new head (£1k) in a high interest savings account. make sure your cooling system is in good nick, then forget about it.

    Sleep easy and enjoy driving.

If it does happen, you're covered, if not then your a big G up.

Mine did 225,00km on a 3.0 before letting go...

The head on my 2.4 is made of steel (wich is an alloy) but not aluminium the only other one I've heard of (though there are probabley others) is Gwyns I tried a magnet on it and it stuck so definitely not an ally head, Gwyns has over heated pulling a horse box up Rhuallt hill but didn't let go, and is still running fine 2 years later.

My truck is now at 220120km, I off-road it use it on motor ways etc, so far I've only needed to change out the glowplugs after this winter, think some other parts are wearing and I'll get to them in turn.

A lot of heads go, but many do not. My first 8months I was watching the temp gauge all the time, but now only glance at it; I spend more time looking at the fuel gauge lol.

I guess the reason I'm so sensitive on this is that I did overheat last month, a few times. I had a leak in the radiator and the temp gage suddenly shot up in traffic. It clipped the red, and I pulled over and let it cool and topped up with water in limped home.
New rad fitted, no leaks now, good coolant and complete flushing with anti-sludge snake oil. So far, so good - needle steady in the middle. Done the oil and the ATF for good measure (lost some ATF in the rad change) and its running better than ever.

I did not know about the leak via the temp gauge, it was spotted by my three year old who said the 'truck's done a wee'. As the temp gauge seems to stick in a dead zone and then suddenly zoom off the scale by which time things may have been cooking for a while... perhaps a more accurate digital temp gauge might be a good investment in detecting problems/leaks early? Can anyone recommend one?

Never rely on the standard temp gauge, it's next to useless.
If the needle has been in the red zone, or even near it, the engine has already overheated.

The standard gauge can be modified to be more acurate though.......

That's really interesting but ... does seem like rather a lot of work.

It must be easier to add a digital gizmo.

It is easier just to fit an after market gauge, it's just finding a suitable place to mount it.

Looking at these: seems good value and lots of mounting options.

My 1.5 petrol Corolla has 267,000km on the clock. Heat-siezed from overheating twice. New water pump fitted about 3000km ago.

Still drives fine now. Been driving Dublin to west Cork in it regularly since November last year.

Garage said that the fact that the car is old (94) and has big miles on it is a factor in the head or head gasket not failing despite the overheatings - the faces have mated together well over the years. He said that head / head gasket failure from overheating can be more common in lower-mileage / newer cars.

Of course, the Corolla 1.5 petrol doesn't have a design flaw making cracking more common or likely than other cars.

My 91 2.4 Surf had 165,000km on it when I sold it (AFAIR), and showed no signs of head trouble.

Wolfracer's idea is a good one - put the money by, use it if the head goes. Put it towards your new Surf when trade-in/update time comes along.

277701 appears to be the number for me.

Truck just broke down on M40 J2hard shoulder. Masses of pressure from coolant, blew off the lid of the expansion bottle. I had fitted a digital temp gauge and I has glanced at it and it was 83. Moments later there was a river of water squirting from the hood and the temp was 120 so there was no warning.

I'm assuming head, could be head gasket??.. But it's the head, aint it?

                          You've done 110k km in 6 months?

Forget about the head, how much you spent on fuel?!

I may have quoted miles before ( now on 172k in miles, so 10k in 6 months) but I have been to Hungary, Belgium (spa) and northern holland. Not so much as a hic cup.

I serviced the car today. Fuel and oil filters only. Could I have done something to cause this?..
