I will do the stat this weekend before I strip it down. Whats the best type of coolant to use in these ? And if you could let me know the correct procedure for changing the oil in the fan I would be very gratefull.
buy some of this, 24 x 250 ml for only £20, I just bought 24 as would cost over £120 in the shop

          Coolant

ACDELCO premix 40/60 is the correct coolant
If you have a look on ebay there is some fastrax pure silocone diff oil, 5000wt. with postage its only £5.00 so it would work out cheaper than getting it from me.
You need to remove the fan. Should be 5 nuts, 13mil if not mistaken. Take the top half of the rad cowling off, then it will slide out. careful undooing the screws holding the 2 halves of the coupling together, the screws are quite soft, and very tight. Try putting a skredriver bit into a rachet and turn very slow with lots of downward pressure. Clean the two halves out with break cleaner. When dry add the oil to one side and reconect the two halves and put it back together.
When you put it back on your surf, stand at the front with the engine running and see if you can feel a difference in the air being blown out by the fan.
Good luck tell me how it goes. Did mine about two years ago, sound hard but it is not that bad.

Cheers John, willl have a go at that this weekend. Just a tip I learned working at Kawasaki, the Japs dont use odd size metrics such as 13, it will be a 12 or 14. Or at least they dont on their motorbikes

30 to 35ml of 7000wt will be fine.
An impact screwdiver makes the removal of the screws holding the two halves together a very easy job and saves any damage to the screws.

                        Update

Well I had a look at the viscous fan this morn, it seems ok. Checked the stat and thats fine. Had a bit of a flush through of the cooling system. So that all checks out ok. So I thought foook it off with its head. Stripped the head off and had a look. No visible cracks that I can see but that dosent mean it has none I guess.
So what to do, what to do ??????????????????????
Think I will bite the bullet and get a head from Roughtrax, a new radiator, heater hose kit (it blew its original hose apart) viscous fan coupling, rad cap, and the bits needed to rebuild it.... Its gonna be like the 6 million dollar man soon coz thats what its gonna have cost me !!
I suppose replacing those parts will elimintat the problem anyway...

Whats that boss, do I want some overtime ? Yes please, I will move my bed into the workshop and just work through the next 6 months !!!

No not got any, but defo no visible cracks in it. Only thing I could see is in the bore of number 3 cylinder is a bit of a score mark near the top of the bore. I turned the piston to just below it and filled the top with liquid and none drained away so i guess there is no issue there. The tops of the pistons are all same colour, 1,2,3 combustion chambers look a little sooty but number 4 seemed pretty clean.
Dunno which cowboys fitted the new waterpump but 3 bolt for the viscous were loose, and the crank pulley bolt was hand tight, didnt even need a b@@dy spanner on it.

Took the air con off whilst i was in there, wont use it and its a pain sat there looking at me...

Thing is I cant really put the head back on just coz I cant see anything. The symptoms are linked to a cracked head, nothing else that could cause them seems to be amiss, so what do you do ? put a new one on I guess. Least I will have peice of mind.
Replacing the engine is an option as mentioned earlier in a post but whats to say that head aint cracked or will crack 100 mile down the road !
