  • 1st gear no power

    Alrighty, heres the problem:

When im on the slightest incline i have absolutely no power in 1st gear, having to quickly switch it to 4wd to get speed up or make it up hills when i am stuck in traffic !

Ive been searching the web and found this problem before:
    http://http://forums.overlander.com....opic.php?t=448

this fellow says it was the 'airflow sensor' that had crud build up from oiled filters and general usage.

    my question is:
    1) where can i find this sensor on a 1989 Hilux Surf 2.4L Turbo Diesel ?
    2) if there are any other things you guys know of ???

    all feedback is very welcome!

have you checked your AFT fluid?

you don't have a airflow meter...

Im not sure where to check that? Could you tell me !
My truck is manual and not slipping gears :/

The problem seriously feels like it isnt getting enough fuel, or it is sucking in too much air from somewhere, but i dont know where to check for these things !!!

I dont have one hey? hrmmmm bugger, it would have been nice if it was that simple then....

Chris, I'm still not understanding the relationship between engine power and you engaging an extra set of cogs to take even more power from the engine...
        Doesn't make sense.

AFAIK The only things that can alter drive to front and rear are the gears, transfer box, diffs and the wheels... now, how could they affect power???

Unless you have the superturbo chip wired up to engage when you drop it into 4WD?

wolfracer: yeah it doesnt make any sense to me either, but alas, thats the case :/

twice now on a 25+ degree hill the car starts to chug in 1st gear and drops down below the normal idle, nearly dying. Flat to the floor on the gas and nothing happens, switch on 4WD low gear and BOOM! off she goes like normal.

its puzzling me i tell ya

LOL, thats no surprise, Low range is called that for a reason, its supposed to that!!

Sorry, assumed it was an Auto as most Surfs are.

It might just be low on power, have you given it a good service recently? Especially the fuel filter.

If its only playing up when under full throttle I'd check the EGR maybe disconnect it, and try it again. ANd make sure the other throttle butterflys on the intake are working properly.

You don't say how it running the rest of the time, is it ok generally?

Ok ill check the butterflys and the egr and get back to you.

The truck is running fine the rest of the time, i just changed the oil on it (using this forum again) and changed the filter, ill change over the fuel filter when i flush the coolant out next week, could be a build up in there and im unsure when it was changed last as i only bought it 2 months ago

                Sluggish motor

Low speed/high revs, could it be the air filter blocked???

If you send me some money I will pop over and check it out for you,Alan

Yeah, i'd run it with the air filter out for a while to see if that's the issue. There was a Canadian on here a month or so ago saying that he was losing power at altitude so it may well be an inherent problem getting air into these engines once it gets thinner (Queenstown is up a hill....)

so it looks like mine is the direct injection model, as the top of my engine says D-turbo not EFIDIESEL.

conflicting issues here tho: if you have a close look at the real picture under the direct injection photo, one of the hoses coming off of the high pressure (blue switch) connects to the T piece, the other curves back around and connects to the thing underneath.

in the graphical picture at the very bottom it has a different set up there :/

could someone with the same model please post up a picture of how theres is connected for me!

mine didnt match either of these, so i changed mine over to the real picture version and will test now.

                        Thank you!

Hrmmm.... i just ran it as per the picture; the turbo light wouldnt go on and the truck wouldnt go over 50kph.

So i have put it back to the way it was.

Its currently set up so the t piece connects to the thing underneath, while both lines from the high pressure connection are left free.

                          This cant be right!

Your vacuum hose are different to that pic, thats the 2L/TE engine, you need to look for 2L/T

The motors are bascally the same, but yours has a mechanical fuel pump, the EFI motors use electronics to work the fuel pump, and the vacuum lines are quiet different.

Edit, the 2LT hose pic (further down page, only looked at top one) is correct for your engine, if it doesn't look like that then you need to make it do so.

The last pic is misleading, part no 90413-04005, the t-piece, goes off to the boost pressure sensor, not the pair of odd looking things in pic.
