  • is this right - drive shaft question

sorry guys - i'm really not that technical minded at all..

i've been hearing a metal knocking noise coming from the front right recenltly, best way to describe it is it sounds like a holow tube being banged with a solid tube.. normally only happens on bumps etc

anyway, this am i crawled underneath and had a rumage around, the only thing i've noticed is this..

i'm sure its the front drive shaft and from looking about i've read that they should have a little play, but i'm guessing somethings not right here

there is a lot of dry, but dark patches around the circled bit and the movement to me seems excessive..

(sorry about the lack of technical talk and crappy pics)

if i get hold of it by the arrow, it moves a lot, rotates and up/down/left/right movement

same pc, but without the circles so you can see what i mean about the dark patches

i've tried to show the movement best i can by wiggling in this video - click the image to play it

is this normal - i'm guessing not

Tony - do i need to pay you a visit? lol

any help/advice would be greatly appreciated

lol, well, that joint is always wiggly, its only damp around the seal, although I normally say replace that bush if its leaking. Its early days TBH.

Its not horribly loose, maybe a little more than normal.

The noise is probably the bronze bushes in the hub, especially if it goes away when in 4wd. But give the shocks and Anti roll bars a tug and make sure they arn't loose.

cheers tony - it just seems excessive to me, movement isnt as noticeable on the film

i wont panic fornow then - but guess its something to add to the to'do list for another day?

checked all suspension, anti roll bar etc - only makes the noise from front right, on bumps and i've heard it in 4wd too

been out playing today, and had a fair few weirdthinsg going on

still getting this metally knocking noise on bumps in both 4wd and 2wd - but its not all the time, sometimes on big bumps and other times on little ones

then i had a little spat were it started ticking over lumpy, hadnt been through any water or anything, had a brew break and still there, decided to just get home, felt underpowered, then it coughed, shot out some black smoke and then seemed to drive ok again..

noises from front seem more noticeable - maybe i'm paranoid!!

dont know the technical term for this part and have spent most of the morning trying to work out which it is - so if someone can tell me what i need to order from here for my LN130 it would be very very usefull

would i be right in thinking its this

if it is, am i right in assuming its drive shaft right out, fit seal, put drive shaft back again, or can it just be pulled out a little and fitted?

any help would be great as I've been using the search button all morning and this is the closest I've come to it, woudl i also need to drain and chaneg the diff oil?

          thanks

I'd like to try and fit this myself on the drive, but I'm guessing its probably going to end up a trip to see Tony

            LOL. Just got your merssage.

The seal is the right one, I'm not sure it'll sort your problem, its really not that much of a leak, more likely still the bronze hubs bushes, how loose in the other end of the drive shaft where it goes into the hub?

I might give you a buzz this arvo mate.. got customers in at mo

other end is fairly tight, the movement is a lot more than that video shows - noticed the lower ball joint rubber has split too and is leaking grease - so no doubt need them - guessing it could be worth doing both ball joints, as the top ones are worn too, and sort this seal too, so if drive shaft out for what they cost may as well stick new CV boots on too?

can you tell about the bronze bushes from just looking or is it strip down job?

Worn bronze bushes cause the driveshaft/s to rattle at the brake disc end when driving over rough ground or bad roads, select 4wd and the rattle stops......to a degree, so you know if the bushes are worn.

                  Cheers Vince

Its still there in 4wd too, i actually first noticed it when in 4wd off road

the noise is hard to describe, soemtimes it sounds like 2 hollow tubes knocking together, sometimes it just sounds like everythings loose and rattley
