  • Stop Solenoid problem on my 2.4 '93.

    Hi Folks.

OK, I've searched the forum for this problem with no avail', so this is a new post which I'm hoping can be resolved!

My '93 2.4 came to a slow and confusing stop a couple of weeks back, and the fella from the R.A.C diagnosed a problem with the 'stop solenoid'. The truck acted as if it had run out of fuel, and simply ground to a halt. The Starter and electrics are working fine. The truck is now sitting in the workshop looking very sorry for itself..

    The problem I have is:

    1) We can't seem to get the stop solenoid out of the truck. (even some bespoke tools which have been welded together wont get it out of the engine. Seriously..It ain't moving!

    2) Where can I get a new one'? Have tried various Diesel specialists.

I'm not the most mechanically minded fella so, so any advice, please be kind!..

I've attached a photo just to show what I'm taking about.

I'm really hoping someone might be able to give a little advice as to how to get the thing off and where to get a replacment

    cheers guys.

Have a look here, it seems there is a hex at the base of the solenoid.

tis easy, get a quailty 32mm spanner, then cut/weld or heat and bend the head up, then grind it thinner to fit under solonoid and shape the head to get room to turn it.

You can get them from Toyota, or used from a breaker truck. No reason why a diesel place that rebuilds pump can't get them either.

If you have a EFI truck its a spill control valve, older non-EFI trucks its a fuel cut off solonoid, they are different.

Remove the Spill Control valve and you will need to rebuild the pump I've heard. Need a new pump I have one?

Can't see why, I've changed lots, if you remove the end plate it screws into then the pump explodes, lol, but the valve just unscrews and has a small gauze filter under it.

Sometimes it dosn't fix the problem, if its got blocked then the same crap that blocked the valve is probably still in the pump, then you need to think about changing/rebuilding the pump.

I've used 2.4 valves in 3.0 motors too, and they seem to run fine. Don't know if they are supposed to be different but they work.

I suspect the shipping costs will be more than the value of the pump!

Have you checked for voltage at the pump at all?
Don't take the RAC blokes diagnostics as being correct.

                    Seems? Have you tested it?

                    :nods:

There should be 3-5 volts at the plug with the ignition on, and it should climb as you press the throttle.

With it out of the pump, and connected up, I've found a working one will spit a little fuel out the end as you turn the ignition on and it energises slightly.

If there is no power at the plug, it could be the loom, but most likely to be the ECU. (assuming your immobilser is working ok)
