  • Redesigned Cylinder Heads

From reading this forum I see that there is a redesigned cylinder head for the 2.4 diesel that people are advised to fit once their existing head has cracked. Is this purely an aftermarket item or did Toyota start fitting them at some point in the production run? If so, anyone know from when? I see the sevice recall of 2.4 surfs was issued by Toyota in april 92, my surf was made in april 93, was wondering what the odds are of it having the improved head on it.

Mine was July 92 and was given the all clear by Toyota Motor Co Japan but they did not state if heads fitted to post April 92 Surf's were different...

According to Toyota the affected vehicles were in the production run between November 12th 1991 to end of April 1992.

I wouldn't worry about the dates or engine numbers on the recall notices, it can't be said for sure how accurate they are. Mine is a 1990 and was outside the so called recall, the head went, I know a couple of 93's that the had has gone.
As far as can be determined it was a bad design on the waterways being to near the valve guides. These were redesigned so a new head not stitched, recon should provide many years of good motoring.
All this is info that has been found/gained over the net, so its realability or accuracy can't be determined for sure.
Say not always what you know, but always know what you say.

Mine's July 1993 and outside the recall notice period but the head cracked in 6 places. Also Koi's was a 2LT engine and mine is a 2LTE engine although the head on both is the same.

        Cheers
