Does anybody know whether theyre all interchangeable partswise, they seem to have different heads and the pumps etc differ but are they all the same block?

well so far it seems as though the crank is the same, the later engine which has no crank position sensor still has the little notch on the crank web to trigger the sensor
The pistons are different as one engine is more pocketed
My original 93 engine looks as though it was run low on oil or had a blockage in the spray bar under #1 piston as the small end had knackered itself consequently giving the piston a bit more height and clattering the head/a valve.
the 2002 engine looks as though it went wading without a snorkel, it has a heavily corroded #1 cylinder like it hydraulicly locked, the small end has also seized at btdc position

There's the early L series with rocker type head and latter bucket and shim type.
Corrosion is usually caused by a cracked head. Coolant and diesel mix to create an acid.
