I don't know much about these sorts of things....... but.......
Would it be possible to change the turbocharger in my 2.4ssrg for a supercharger?
    Theoretically speaking anyway..
    cheers
My mates just got a Ford F150 which he's gonna supercharge, and all the talk has made me think.....

It would be one hell of a job. You would need a number of things but most importantly space.

The thing with an F150 is that it uses a Small Block Ford V8 of which there are a number of commercially available supercharger packages. The Supercharger in these cases will mount on top of the V underneath the Throttle assembly.

With a supercharger you need some way of driving it - normally a belt from a modified crankshaft pulley and on the Surf you will not have sufficient room to add this pulley (approx 2" extra depth) for the belt between the front of the engine and the radiator.

You would then need to find some place to mount the supercharger, make up some tubing to run from it to the throttle body and from the air filter to the supercharger.

My advice is don't even bother trying. A smaller turbo or two stage turbocharging would be easier to achieve and even then would be very difficult. The main advantage of a Supercharger over a turbo is low end power deliver as the supercharger is driven from low revs whereas the turbo only comes on song when the exhaust is outputting enough to drive it. Can't say that the turbo lag on the Surf is bad anyway so you would probably not notice much difference.

On an F150 you could fit a supercharger in a day if you work hard at it - a Surf is more like a week if you are lucky.

Best thing to do is to fit a Small Block V8 in the Surf!!!.

    Cheers

There's the formulation of a plan.

You may want to get a copy of Classic American, lots of classifieds in there. Any Small Block will do the job, Ford, Chevy (or Pontiac, GMC) or Chrysler (318, 400).

Now a Surf with a 440 Six pack out of a Roadrunner would be an absolute monster.

When you have one of those, who needs a supercharger.

        Cheers

Yeah but horrendously expensive - hell of an engine though.

Go on, Do it. You know you want to. 302 is a good engine, built by hillbillies for people who never service their car, doesn't need oil changes except at 200000 mile intervals and will run on farm effluent.

Plus it would still be easy enough to waterproof for offroading and you could put an LPG kit on it.

This guy has done the conversion.

that engine fits in there a treat,, if i were to fit it i would go with the 302 as i know them backside first,, i have a sierra xr4 with a fully worked 302 in it at the mo and im gonna sell it soon so the v8 hilux is in the serious thought depot....

just dont know what gear box to use as i will need a very strong one..

The Toyota one will take it, Other than that use a TH350 as they are bombproof especially if you put an uprated valve body in it, you could even fit one of the manual valve bodies in it that allow you to use a Hurst sequential shifter.

Mind you the TH350 is a big beast and you would have to do some serious mods to get it in in front of the transfer case. Upside also on the 350 is that it is easy to fix and I think you can get an adapater off the shelf to fit the Ford engine.

                            Cheers
