Cam Belt

My 1993 3l kzn130 has covered 86ooo (I assume kilometres) I would like to change the cam belt myself and would value any advice on the procedure and any 'pitfalls' for the unwary amateur.
Can the job be done without timing pins and should I change the idler pulley?
Hard question I know but would this job be within the capabilities of someone who has changed timing belts on 'common or garden' type vehicles?

Tis quite easy, there are no dramas that normal timing changing 'rules' don't cover.

The idler rarely needs changing, if it spins smoothly and quietly then its ok.

The tensioner shouldn't show any signs of oil leaking and should be to hard to push in by hand.

You need a small drill bit or allen key to hold the tension compressed till new belt fitted and lined up.

Timing belt

Forgot to ask, is the timing belt itself shared with the 4runner or other models.
I am reminded of a sobering incident some years ago when fitting a Vauxhall belt. The new belt looked identical to the old one with same number of teeth same length etc. but only when fitted did I notice the tooth angle had a slightly different profile causing the belt to rise slightly on turning the crank shaft pulley (manually).
I have no doubt the new belt would have been thrown on start up.
I would like to fit a Gates (motaquip) belt if possible.
Would anyone have a serial number for same? (or recommend another)
I must admit I do get very nervous and over cautious when changing timing belts.
My surf is a 1993 3L Manual and is (please correct me if necessary) designated Kzn130

yeah, its the same as a 3.0TD 4Runner, and also a LandCruiser Colorado too. As long as its a 1KZ-T or 1KZ-TE motor.

The Gates belt has marks printed on it in relation to the timing marks on pulleys, just like the Gen Toyota one, so its even more foolproof...

The 3.0 Toyota belt is marked too.

The only thing I'd add to what Tony said is that I would turn the engine over twice (4 crankshaft revolutions) by hand, then re-check the timing.
