  • LN130 Auto gearbox reverse problem - judder in reverse, creeps forward in neutral

    Hi there,

My trusty 1992 surf SSR-X auto has suddenly developed a problem with the auto box. http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/forums/im...lies/knife.gif I have been using it this summer to tow my caravan. It has coped well but I've noticed the gearbox is getting hot, noticeable when going up hills as the radiator fan kicks in. I guess towing causes the torque converter to work harder, heats the ATF more, hence this heats the radiator (as the ATF is cooled through pipe in bottom of rad) and fan kicks in. Also its getting hot in the cab due to heat rising from the transmission... melts your maltesers! (must fix air con!) So I have bought an oil cooler to fit to the ATF pipes before they go into the RAD, as recommended by the caravan club of all things. Thought I'd better fit an oil cooler to avoid problems with the box overheating.

So just one week after changing the cam belt and front discs/pads, and still waiting for my oil cooler to arrive.....

Last weekend, I tried to reverse still with caravan hooked up, got no movement. In fact engine would not rev above 2000rpm, so something felt wrong. revd in neutral, it creeps forward. Cannot move the H2-L4 lever without serious effort with engine running. So i unhooked the caravan and drove up and down for 5 mins, seems fine in forward gears. In reverse, it will now go back, but you have to rev it, and then it will judder back. It feels like it is trying to go forwards at the same time as it trying to go backwards. Ie. it jumps back a foot or so, then stops abruptly and bounces/rocks forward slightly (as if it were in park or something). Definately something wrong with reverse. So I checked the ATF, which was on the HOT low level, so topped up to high line. Hasn't cured it at all. The 4wd button engages the 4wd properly, tested this out by going up a very steep farm track, no problems going forward. Also i changed the ATF about 18m ago, done maybe 8k miles since.

So having read a few threads on here, saying it could be the selector linkage needing ajdustment,( I hope so) or could be a burnt or worn reversing cluctch in the auto box. In which case its a specialist repair or recon box. Has anybody had this problem and been able to fix it? Am I wasting my time fiddling around with this, or should I try and get a decent replacement auto box for it?

Has anybody on here changed an auto box? It doesn't look that simple to me, its a big old transmission!

Any advice really appreciated - especially from anybody who's had the problem and been able to fix it without having to change the transmisison.

Thanks and all the best everyone.

    Bob

Does sound like a transmission fault. I think it was BigBobE that had the same problem.

I have a 2.4 transmission here (actually I have three!) that you can have for £60.
I just so happens that I'll be near Newbury tomorrow at around 2pm on my way to Sussex.
If you would like the Transmission, I could fetch it with me and meet you at Chieveley Services?

      Hi Bushwacker -

Thanks for the quick reply. That would be great but I'm due be somewhere from 12pm so don't think I can hang around till 2pm without some serious ear bashing from "the boss"! Tell you what, I'm going to go out there and now to try adjusting that linkage. If no joy, then I'm very interested in taking one of your transmissions. What time are you planning to leave, so I can let you know to bring one along or not?

Ps - is there any way to exhchange contact details without posting them up on the internet to all the viagra sellers?

              Just to update -

So I've been out there this morning adjusting the linkage. Tried in a dozen or so positions from front to back of adjustment range, once or twice it seemed to cure the problem then you move up and down the gear selector a few times and again, rough in reverse and creeping forward in neutral. So i'm coming to the conclusion that my box is worn out and should be replaced. It has done 230,000 km, and I think those last few miles towing a big caravan up hills at 60mph have finished her off. The chaps at Newbury 4x4 centre seem to agree and think the reverse bands in the box are probably worn out or breaking up.

So Bushwhacker I think I'll take you up on the offer of a box, if you can chuck one in the back I can meet you up at chieveley this aft. I'll be in big bother with the boss but if it means I get the truck fixed up its got to be worth it!

if you email me on bobby4star@yahoo(dot)co(dot)uk I can give you my phone number.

              Thanks
              Bob
