  • Power Steering Leak?

    All,

I have just noticed that there seems to be a small deposit of fluid in the passenger footwell on my 93 2.4 pickup, it seems to be coming out of the footwell vent. I have checked the power steering fluid and it looks like that its the culprit! Anyone had a similar problems to this, and anyone got any advice on how you go about fixing it! Looking in from the engine bay there does'nt seem to be any visible leaks showing!

    Any advice greatly appeciated!

    Regards,

    Geoff

Are you certain it's oil? more likely coolant from a leaking heater core.

I think you're right on that one! I've pulled the glove box out and I've noticed that its coming out the footwell vent! Do I need to take the dash out to find where its leaking?

it is probably the heater matrix leaking which means a total dash out job

Is it a repair or replacement job with the heater matrix?

Try Yellow Pages and find a local radiator specialist as they may know if they can rebuild the matrix.

I have heard of some stuff that you can pour into rads that fixes leaks, is it possible to do this insitu - before I strip out the rest of the dash to get at the matrix - Probably a stupid question but I'd thought I'd ask!

They only mask the problem to be honest, and could block small water passages in the cooling system and causemore expensive problems later on, best replace the matrix. Ask one of the breakers on here.

A temporary fix for the leak would be to connect the two heater pipes like this.

You can then work on fixing the matrix and still drive the vehicle.

Check its not just water, it maybe condesation from the A/C condensor, it drains into the bottom of the heater matrix housing, then is a connected to a small fitting that exits under the fuel filter and lets it drip on the floor. This is often unplugged or been kicked off over time.

I'd dip finger in it and lick it if it was me, if it tastes sweet its coolant, otherwise just water. But obviously I wouldn't recommend this to anyone as coolant is bad for you....
