  • Engine management light "ON"

Does any of you guys know if you change an engine in a Surf, do you have to get the engine management light ( "CHECK") turned off with the aid of a computer? I have phoned my very helpful (choke) Toyota dealer who says his computer does not comunicate with my type of car. Also on the new engine that was fitted to my Surf, there was no hole for the knock sensor, just above the sump on the fuel injector side of the engine. Has anyone else encountered this problem in the past. Any help welcome.

Whats the mileage. as if the timing belt light is on you need to reset it via your speedo. remove rubber bung & press the button inside with a thin instrument

First things first, what engine did you remove and what engine did you fit? Which model surf do you have?

        red light

sorry for taking so long to reply, busy doing other things. the enine that was removed was a 2.4 TD efi engine, 2l type. The engine that replaced it was different as the garage that fitted it said the sump, pick up pipe, fuel pump, oil pump were different. The garage also said ther was no hole to place the knock sensor into, so they made a bracket and bolted it all up. The model of surf i have is an SSR 1991 with 116,000kms on the clock. The timing belt light does not come on during running, but did go on when old engine seized solid after combustion chamber came slack in the cylinder head. I have found a local garage that said they will stick there computer on it and try and locate the problem. All i have to do now is get my wife to part with even more money for the Surf. Cheers

Is the engine still a 2.4 Diesel, if so is it a new one maybe a 2LT2 or is it an old second hand one like a 2LT.

The problem with changing the engines is that the 2LTE ECU module will not be set up for the different engine - generally the ECU from the donor car for a second hand engine should be swapped into you car with the engine. The ECU is what is switching on the engine check light and although you can reset it by disconnecting the battery for 15 minutes, the check light will come on again because the ECU still thinks that there is a problem. If the new engine is not using an ECU because it is not an electronic controlled engine then you can most likely just get the ECU switched off and that will turn out your light. Alternatively disconnect the feed to the light on the dashboard.

          Cheers

sounds like theyve put a TOYOTA 2.4 HIACE engine in it, as it lacks the knock sensor
