    WHAT A PIG!

this is NOT an easy job, is it! Well, I've removed the fan, belts, rocker cover, air tubes from turbo, all the gubbins round the right side, cam belt off, and all but one bold from the exhaust manifolds - need an 8mm star socket for that as its just too rounded off for an 8mm hex.... got the head bolts out USING A 4 FT SCAFFOLD POLE TO GET THE LEVERAGE!

as to whether or not the head has gone, well, the valve cams are all rusted up, so there is water in the head for sure!

Just got that last manifold bolt to get out and put my engine hoist together then i'll get it off for inspection.

New gasket and bolt set due tuesday. Stormy Head already here, which is gonna need a clean as there is rather a lot of what looks like metal gritty stuff in the oil... we'll keep you informed. Oh and stormy, was it your brute force that broke the front lifting point off where it bolts to the head? or some other overly zelous mechanic?

enough for today folks! im nackered.

Definately not me as i lifted the head out with piratestorm.I have taken the heads off myself just by standing legs astride the engine and lifted the head off rather than set the hoist up

theres only 2 bolts holding the therm housing to the head, the top leg (there the hoist point should be) is missing presumed snapped off, and the bolt hole is cracked off. I'll transfer my therm housing anyway as there looks like enough thread to hold a bolt there. might get a picture if i can be bothered tomorrow!

theres a LOT to unbolt, isnt there!

how do you take the head off without removing the exhause manifiold - what bit do you undo to accomplish this?

thank the lord I removed the air con years ago!

at this rate, im gonna have a breaker, not a runner!!

I just undid the 3 bolts of the exhaust manifold flange then did it Stormy's way, stood in engine bay n picked it out with both manifolds/egr still attached. H

I always leave the manafolds on and either do it like Rich or if I have another person with me we lift either side on the manafolds.

It is a little hard and daunting the first time you do it but after you've done umpteen times it gets easier.
If at first you don't succeed.........give up.

So much easier to leave most of the "gubbins" attached and lift out manually (two people) from either side. Then disassemble on your workbench.

Each to their own, I, personally, prefer to strip it in situ then lift the head off on its own.

Either way, it's cool, they finished the job 18 months ago.
