  • Any Clues......Please

    Hi All,
I am looking for some help with my 2.4 1990 LN130. In 2 weeks I am due to drive it to Torrevieja, some 1200 miles each way. In prep I searched the site and have changed all fluids, oils and filters. I have installed a new rad and done the cv boots. Fixed my rear window mechanism and installed a cd player after 7 years without one!!.
All good so far......however a company local to me is producing BioDiesel and as I have been SVO user for years with no bother(regular oil/filter changes etc) I decided this would be a good shout at 90pence per litre. So I filled the tank and 2 - 20 litre containers for our test run to Belgium (fag town). On the return I noticed vey sluggish performance and I surfed the site for answers.
I removed and flushed the tank, manually blew through the feed line to the fuel filter and changed the filter (loads of thick brown crap like glue came from the bottom of the old fuel filter) I changed out the seals on the fuel pump (top ones only) for a short while it seemed better but today its back to very sluggish behaviour. Its like its missing if you listen to it. Very lumpy acceleration. Please guy's sorry for the novel but I would appreciate any help or ideas. Thanks
    Steve

it sounds like a crap batch of bio.I would clean the system out again and try running on straight fuel to see if that cures the problem

      Update

Thanks Stormforce, I have now tried with Dino Derv and fuel system cleaner but no joy, so after more surfing this site I found a thread that mentions ATF as an diesel injector/all round cleaner............I removed the diesel filter and primed it to the max with pure ATF, the rest of the 1 litre of ATF went into the Dino Derv in the tank. I crossed my fingers and started it up, rough at first then gradually smoother and smoother. After a 5 mile run its almost back to normal. Hope I dont get my tank dipped as the ATF is red!!!!. I would welcome any more advice please.

Did you check the tank breather is clear?
Try driving with the fuel filler cap removed to see if that cures the problem.
If it does, then clean/replace the breather valve or drill a 3mm hole through the filler cap to let any vacuum escape..

          Update

Hi Bushwhacker, when I took the tank out I could not remove the posi screws that held the filler tube in place, they were well chewed up. Stupid question coming now....is the breather the small hole part way down the filler tube that links up into a separate tube going to the tank? If it is can I disconnect under the wheel arch and put an air line down it? Thanks. I will try drilling the hole as well.

            No Joy

Hi All, after a 2 hour break its back to rough running again, tried the fuel cap off trick but no improvement, where do I go from here? possibly injector change?
            Just to recap:
            1)It was running ok
            2) Tried to save cash with biodiesel
            3) Lumpy running after long run with biodiesel
            4) Changed to dino derv with no improvement
            5) Removed and cleaned tank, blew line through to diesel filter, changed filter
            6) No improvement
            7) Primed filter with ATF, initial improvement but then back to rough running
            8) Fuel cap off trick but no improvement
            9) Where now!!!!!!!

            Thanks

              Change the filter again.
The five mile run used what was in the filter, now whatever muck was left in the fuel lines has clogged the filter again by the sounds of it.

                  More help!! Please

As an aside from my earlier probs I tried to do the management code analysis on my 1990 LN130. I jumped the correct points in the ecu but no flashing light, hang on I thought I will check the engine management light normally. Ahhh, the bulb must be blown so I stripped the dash and got to the area under my rev counter, no bulb just a red neon tipped plastic stalk. Help guys what now.
Also on my throttle sensor a small black barrel item is missing on the right hand side. What is it and where can I get one please

i will have a look on a 2.4 i got at the unit and see what it is and let you know.If i got a spare one i'll post it up for you
Just thinking about it that barrel thing is probably just a small filter to stop dust/dirt getting in.I'll dig one out tomorrow for you

On the top of the tank is like a small filter which may well be blocked up restricting the fuel flow

                        Thanks

Hi Stormforce, thanks for the heads up about the barrel item and the tank filter. I would sure appreciate the barrel if you have one. All costs etc covered.
I am going to look at the tank filter now. Thanks

                          Clarify

Hi Stormforce, as per your post:
"On the top of the tank is like a small filter which may well be blocked up restricting the fuel flow"

I have taken the tank out again and going by Bushwhacker's excellent link with pics here: http://www.hiluxsurf.co.uk/forums/sh...ight=fuel+tank

I am confused again!!! do you mean the tank breather filter? which on mine goes nowhere or do some people have an inline filter attached to the fuel pick up pipe? My tank is exactly as the pic.

The missus has banned me from working on my baby today as all she has seen is a pair of feet sticking out from underneath. Great ground clearance though!!!
I will resume tomorrow which is when my new filter should arrive. Thanks for all the advice and help and I am determined to get my surf to Spain in 2 weeks.

all it is is just a breather pipe but not going anywhere. There is nowmally a small one way valve type thing fixed to it.That has been known to block or get stuck.Just replace it with a small inline filter type thing

Gotta agree with Richard n we've heard of similar probs with so called Bio-Diesel on here before. It's not for me I'm afraid (SVO or Dino) so with out wanting to repeat all that has been said here my tuppence worth..

Try adding straight Dino for a while diluting the Bio... as ya go n NO Bio
Never had any problems running my ole 2.4 100% SVO in over 2 years.. or my 3.0l in over 2 years the last 7-8 months on 100% WVO meself until recent Vistit to the Clog!!
read on ...... Long n short of it ....

So filters changed n off to Scotland (21st May offroad weekend, Drumclog) no problems what so ever on the way up, playday Sat afternoon I noticed the Truck wouldn't start immediately when needed, never been a problem before offroading !! Lossened up the Crud probably !!
We decided to go to Supermarket some 4+ miles away, suddenly service light on the dash is on n in to limp mode (30mph only) limping we made it to the Supermarket.
At the fuel station I stuck in 15 squid of Dino(Truck thought it's his birthday) back down the road a while n alls back to normal so far !!
                              (No more probs until Sunday)
Sunday I topped up with WVO for the homeward journey, after about 30 minutes or so, service light comes on into limp mode again n on n off untill Carlisle some 60 miles away, now I could top up with 1/4 tank of Dino, n continued to top up 1/4 tank at a time all the way home with no problems.
Once at home changed the filter on top of tank (only filter I forgot before) n straight back on 100% WVO.
                              No probs todate..
Sorry for the sermon n Good Luck
