  • waterpump!

Hi, i have a 1993 (L) 2.4 td surf. Two months ago i had my surf MOTed, whilst in garage was told i had a water leak. On inspection they told me i needed a new waterpump. Had new waterpump fitted. One week later water poured out bottom of surf took her back 2 garage was told faulty waterpump! Had third pump fitted. Now it appears to be leaking again. took back 2 garage was told head gasket was gone & this was forcing the water out the pump?
    Is this possible.
Mechanic charged me £500 to supply & fit pump (along with another £500 to get her through the MOT)
    Is He shafting me?
Ive had my surf 7 years now never been a bit of trouble or lost a drop of water & has been a pleasure to own (apart from fuel costs).
Any ideas as to why pump keeps going.
    Thanks

they haven't snapped a bolt have they which is causing the pump not to seal properly and causing the leak

That was the excuse they used in the first place. was told bolt had sheared had it drilled out & new bolt fitted. This all seems to have started when i had cam belt fitted over a year ago. belt started squealing but only for first 5 mins so never bothered me untill resently when it started doing all the time so took back and was told about bolt.

i would personally find another garage and get them to check it over and let you know what they find before doing anything. If they find faults then ask them if they think the other garage has buggared it up and then go to the original garage and ask if they will pay the bill to the other garage to put right their mistakes and then take it from there

At the end of the day you paid him to do a job and he now wants more money to put it right which he should of done in the first place. If it comes to it threaten him with trading standards or something

That's just not right, Rad out, Bottom pulley off, a few bolts around the cam belt cover and about 6 bolts on the pump, 2 - 3 hours max and he wanted £500! Im in the wrong job.

Theres no way that a faulty head gasket would force the water out of the pump, it would come out of the expansion tank instead, Unless of course he hasn't tightened the bolts up on the pump in which case it would leak anyway whether head gasket gone or not.

That £1000 you paid him would of bought you another Surf......nearly.
If at first you don't succeed.........give up.

wasnt looking at spending as much as that but as i had forked out £500 on the mot didnt feel i had much choice.
Water pours out when cold but barely drips when warmed up. Def comming from same area as before, bottom of waterpump.
just waiting 2 hear back from mechanic! think he is looking for an excuse for leak so he can charge me again.
                    Cheers

I got ripped this way with my timing belt last year, guy broke the pully trying to get it off without taking the rad off, wish I'd known mudskipper and An!mal_69 back then, could have bought the kit and done it myself with a little help from them.

It's not a terribly hard job to do yourself, even if forced to do it outside, I'd look at doing it yourself if you can, sounds like you'd likely do a better job anyhow. It didn't get driven with the bad leak, did it? I'd be concerned about the head for sure if so. The 2L won't tolerate insufficient coolant lightly unfortunately. I'd certainly look for money back from that joker, you're entitled to it, and then go to another wrench.

The guy sounds like an idiot. Squealing probably came from damage to the crankshaft pulley when the changed the timing belt wrong. The water pump probably wasn't fitted properly, the belt's not driving it properly the head's probably gone now and he needs a good kicking. IMHO, of course.
