  • relay problems?

    Hiya,

I think I've got three relay related questions, but any advice will be much appreciated

OK, when I park up in the sun and my truck gets quite hot inside, the tailgate window stops working...I don't mean you can't see through it anymore, I mean it refuses to wind down from either the swich by the gear sticks or the key in the tailgate. I know there's a relay at the back somewhere, as you can hear it clicking when the window *is* working, but it doesn't even click when the truck's hot - does that make sense? Can anybody tell me how to fix it, please?

Second one, then - my air conditioning isn't working I had a Surf before the one I have now and I remember that, when you switched in the AC, there was an appreciable drop in engine revs - I even had snow coming out of the vents once! This one, though, does absolutely nothing when you switch in the AC - the light on the switch comes on, but no drop in revs and no cold air I've looked for a fuse but I can't find a specific one for the AC and none of the fuses I found were blown anyway. Again, I'd imagine there's a relay involved here, but I can't hear one switching when use the AC switch - any ideas?

The third one's more of a "hmm, that's interesting" than a "why doesn't this work"... I've noticed that, when I put the accelerator down about half way, there's a relay click from under the dash somewhere - what's it doing? What's it for? Where is it? Why is it switching willy-nilly and the relays I actually *want* to work are doing b*gger all?

So there you go, thanks for any help

    All the best,

    Paul

Not sure about your window or the mystery clicking in the dash but have you checked wether the air con pump clutch works when you press the button??? if the gas is low it wont try to work anyway, get the gas checked out first!!
If it aint broke...........give it some more abuse!!!!!!!!
I gave it some abuse.................and it broke!!!!!!!

      Check the fuse first!

A number of people on this forum have gone down the expensive route only to find the fuse behind the glovebox housing (by the ECU) is either missing or has blown!

I have also heard a 'clicking' behind my side of the dash, everything seems to work ok like the aircon and windows etc. but the click has now developed into a manic clicking that seems to come on irregularly and is getting really annoying. I took out the relays and fuses today and cleaned the contacts but it made no diference. Sorry no help but similar things happening.

          a tale of three relays

          Thanks for your help everyone

How do I check the AC gas level? I've read somewhere about a sighting glass and I've had a look around in the engine bay but with no success... I'm fairly certain the AC pump does nothing whatsoever when I turn it on with the AC switch, but that's only based on the fact that the engine doesn't labour under the strain of the pump - is there a better way of checking?

As to the fuse behind the glovebox - blimy! Do you mean I have to rip the glovebox out to get at it? I've pulled the dash apart once before to change my radio, but it wasn't the most fun job in the World

One last thing - does anybody know where the rear window relay actually is? Is it inside the tailgate or off to one side in the rear quarter panels? It sounds like it's off to one side to me...

          Thanks again,

          Paul
