Shirly when the head goes you should get the temp guage rising, a customer of mine was driving along when BANG! the rad hose blew off, now its in the workshop and the heads coming off tomorrow, Is it Gasket or head? Whats the odds??? Also anyrecommendations for a head? The last one we bought was £600 and that was bare with no valves etc !! Shocking. I am really !!!!ed off again

if it blew the hose off id say the heads gone as youve got a lot of back-pressure uk cylinder heads is the best bet full head including cam & valves.
you also need gaskets & new stretch bolts

If your hose blew off then the rad cap cant be doing it's job, it should release any pressure over 0.9 Bar (about 13 psi) so either your hose clamp was weakened or the cap is no longer working!!
Check this out first as if the combustion pressure is high the coolant should exit through the overflow route. If the cap has siezed solid then the expansion of water when hot would quite easily blow a hose!!!
If it aint broke...........give it some more abuse!!!!!!!!
I gave it some abuse.................and it broke!!!!!!!

Because of where the temp sender is situated you may get a sudden rise in temp as the colant pushes out past the sender. Once the water level in the system has dropped the sender no longer sits in the coolant so appears to read normal. If ti pushes out more coolant it may rise and drop again as the coolant hits the sender.
