  • overheating 2.4

    i have just bought a k reg 2.4 and am having trouble bleeding the water system through.
    i get hot air at the rear but at best only luke warm air to the front blowers. i have had her ticking over for over an hour and the gauge only goes up to half way.
    took her out for a test drive all seamed well bobbed about covering about 10-15 miles stoping and starting but later that day went out again did and did about the same mileage approx 15 miles an she bubbled over {never let her go in the red}
    when i looked she had pored her water out the expanshon bottle. i have put a new stat in and a new rad cap she had a new head before i bought her.there seems to be a lot of pressure in the top hose as well.
    ANY HELP welcome as the misses is on my case now for spending so much time trying 2 sort her out with no sucsess

      Could be just an air lock, caused when you replaced to thermostat.
      Did you make sure the jiggle valve in the 'stat was at the top when you fited it?

      On a cold engine, remove the rad cap and top up with coolant. Leave the cap off for a few hours, overnight is best, then check level again and top up if necessary. The expansion tank only needs to be a third full.

      The rear heater pipework is independant of the thermostat, but if they are getting warm, at least you know the coolant is circulating.

        found a small leak on the main rad i know about the loss of coolant causing overheating but will that cause the top hose to get hard????
        I havent got the details of the head change it was done before i got her along with the water pump.
        Something else i found was small holes in the exhaust look to be about a 5mm drill hole apeox 5-6 of the in middle section is there any reason for that anyone could help me with before i weld them up thanks.

          Not sure where the holes are, the only time I have seen purpose holes is when manufacturers have put one or two in the ends of the silencer to drain water out of so the exhaust doesnt rot from the inside out. If it's on the pipework then that is probably rusted through and will need repair.

          I had an air lock in my 2.4 for bl00dy ages after a garage didn't bleed the system correctly. I spent over two hours one day with the rad cap off and the engine ticking over, Also left the cap off over night which helped but didn't fix in my case (I was probably unlucky). Someone on this forum designed a filler to remove the air lock and fill the system out of some water bottles and hoses.
