  • How do I adjust steering box correctly?

    I have a surf mk2 KZN130 3.0l diesel auto

Can someone please advise the correct procedure for adjusting the steering box.... ie should the front wheels be jacked up?

I have a case of wheel shimmy.... all joints, track rods, steering damper and idler arm have been checked and found to be OK... that just leaves the steering box.

    Thank you.

Have you checked the wheel balancing and for out of round or buckled wheels or tyres? Have you swapped the front and rear wheels over?
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

      Pitman arm?

      Are you running oversize tyres?

If it's the original steering damper, it could be knackered and can't cope.

You say all the above items have been checked, but was that by yourself or a garage after a few £££££s?
We'll keep guessing 'till you return.

          Thank you for all your replies;

I have had the wheels balanced, and the tracking alined.

I have also fitted a new steering damper

I had the vehicle re MOT'd and it passed!

I have this afternoon adjusted the steering box (just wanted to check on this forum whether I've done it correctly) There was a little play... but I have now adjusted it and I think I've done it correctly.

just taken it out and still the wheel shimmy... the steering has some shake, as if the wheels need balancing, but thats been done!

It feels a little unsafe.... I am holding the steering wheel in a straight ahead position...yet the wheels are moving side to side... Its a bit like being on a train..where you are going forward, but the carriage is moving side to side.

          any more ideas please!

Have you had a look at the connection on the steering post?

There should be a little backlash in the steering box.

I would guess the front wheel bearings need nipping up, but the MOT should have picked that up.

You didn't say what tyres you're running, and are they inflated correctly?
