  • Help please...

Hi all, its been a while, hope you all are well.
Anyway, to the point. We are on the Macmillan again in 4/5 weeks and i have a problem.
    The truck is a 2,4.
A month or so ago it developed a knocking noise under the bonnet. I can only describe it as the type of noise you would expect to hear when the thrust bearing was on its way out. However, its an auto so it cant be that.
It only happends on tickover and not all the time but when it dose it starts quiet and gets louder.
Theres no lack of power and starts first time, also ticks over sweet.
I changed the timing belt etc a few months ago and when doing it noticed the water pump was damp underneath but at the time i couldnt afford to change it.Is it poss its that? I now have one an will be swapping it on Thursday.

Anyone have idea's on this that would help please. I would hate to let my sponsers down half way through the Mac.

    Cheers in advance.

    Phil

Sorry Phil, only just saw this thread, most of us are on Matt's grown-ups site.

It gets bumped down out of because of the newbies starting loads pointless threads in the general section instead of searching first!

Anyhoo, can you tell if the knock is from the top or bottom end of the engine?
How old is the engine oil?
      Whats the oil pressure like?
Is the noise worse under load?

Hi Phil. Don't remember you being so moody

'Thrust bearing sound' is more of a squeaking or squealing sound than a knock isn't it?

My guess is it's related to your cambelt somehow. Harmonic balancer (on the crankshaft pulley) is the usual culprit for squeaking. When mine de-bonded (as part of a major head exploding event) it squeaked from sliding around and gradually got to the point where it (or the belt) was slapping the cambelt cover and gradually wore a hole in it.

Also had a squealing, knocking noise on the V6, which was stray bolt that had pierced the cambelt itself and used to like going for a little ride around inside there. Its source it still a mystery.

I think that when you change the pump you will find something in that region that's not right. Definitely look at the harmonic balancer.

        Hope that helps.

Hi Bushwacker and Sancho. Soz about the moody bit but its been panic stations here with the Mac looming up, and i needed answers.
Anyway, "grown up site?" email me the link please.
found the prob, it was the cranck pully. It somehow worked loose and cracked along the side of the woodruff slot so got another from Milners. Lasted 200 miles. Started knocking again so took it off and that was cracked aswell. The slot in the cranck had opened up a couple of mil so the kry was slopping about.
Anyways i have bedded another key in that metal filler and forced more down each side. Fitted another pully and used permanate locktite on the thread of the bolt.
Time will tell now, if it starts again then the welder is coming out to play.
Thanks for the info tho, and send me the address of matts site please.
