Was seriously thinking about getting a surf until i read postings on this site, have seen some great ones for sale, what is the percentage for head failures? most places give a 6 month warranty as long as heads etc are covered. Siht waht sulohd i do, put away £1600 just in case?????????????. what about mileage or can they go at anytime??

Depends what your after, budget etc. A poll currently running on here with 128 having voted is 19.5% of those voted have had head troubles. Seeing as there is over 1700 registered people on here theres still a few left to vote. Go for the 3.0, to date it seems the safer bet for not having head troubles, but then again it wasn't all 2.4's that suffered just the unlucky ones with the badly designed heads. If its got a NEW head fitted then you shouldn't have any worries.
As said by someone else on here, thats what these forums are for,for people to post their problems/troubles, we don't need post how trouble free our motors are. So you see it always looks far worse then it is. I have a 2.4 the head went, would I buy another 2.4?, yes I would. If you can pick up a 2.4 well within your budget then put some aside just in case, apart from the odd badly designed head they are pretty much bullet proof.

Mate i agree with koi, one of the good things about these forums is to give out advice on probs we surf owners encounter. So on the face of it it looks that all surfs suffer head probs, it's not true. A mate of mine has a surf and he regularly thrashes the pants off it, on and off road, he has had no probs to date. I have a 2.4td SSR-X 1993. Only had it a few weeks so early days for me, no probs either. I wouldn't worry about what may happen just keep it serviced and enjoy it.
I'm not 100% but it seems the first gen suffer the most head probs. If thats true then go for the 2nd gen onwards. Think that is 1993 on.
If you do decide to go for it then just enjoy.....................munc her
