fuel problem

hi please can anybody help,
i have a surf 2.4td which just cut out while driving, i managed to get it started after several minutes then everything was fine, until i left it for a while, when you went to start it she just turned over if out of fuel, i have changed the fuel filter and it made no differance, i have noticed now that when the engine is running the mushroom on the hand primer pump sucks in,
any ideas?

You might have a blocked breather on the tank f it happens again try opening the tank to see if it sucks air....Ive had the same problem i just need to now get it into a workshop to rerun a breather into the engine bay and do away with the one way valve for a small air filter which should improve filling it up also.
