  • spare tyre

ok at the risk of sounding really stupid...
my new surf has the spare tyre mounted underneath, which i have not had the pleasure of dealing with before. how do you lower the tyre? im guessing there is a bolt head/nut somewhere that you crank to lower the tyre, but i may be going blind as i cant find it anywhere. can anybody fill me in please? its a 1993 SSR 2.4.

    cheers

you will need the long jack rod from under the reae seats and then put the hooked end of the rod through the hole in the bumper and i think you have to go in towards the passenger side to locate the mechanism to lower the wheel

ok so i located the hole for the end of the jack rod to lower the wheel, which is directly in the centre just above the tyre.
but the hole in the rear bumper to access it has a plastic attachment on the back which directs the rod on an angle over to the passenger side, seemingly to nowhere.
there is no way to access the actual hole above the wheel from this, which seemed strange, so i removed the plastic attachment via 2 bolts, and then was able to put the rod straight through and lower the tyre without any trouble.
any reason that anybody knows of for what this plastic bit is for? it seems as though it is there to direct the rod to the left but that is not where it needs to go. seems like a lot of extra effort to remove this every time you need to get to the spare, so i guess i will just leave it off unless anybody knows a reason otherwise?

      cheers

the rod goes to the left because that is where the winding mechanism is, the bar should fit in a slot on it and then turn to wind the wheel down

i found the same thing actually on someones truck where there was a metal plate inside the bumper obstructing the hole so you couldn't get the bar to the mechanism. The metal plate had to be cut out in order to be able to lower the spare

well the winding mechanism on mine is straight ahead directly in the centre of the tyre, not to the left. there was no way i could get to it without removing the plastic part that directs it to the left. strange but true
