  • Ideas??

Right to start with i have a few bad feelings about this, i've just put a new head on my motor. Now when i start it, the beast sounds really really loud and there is way too much black smoke coming out of the rear end! I expected a burst of smoke due to the left over oil and cr*p in the chambers, but its like a war zone if you stand anywhere near it!!??
Now i know there is a possibilty the timing could be a miss and that could account for the loudness of it (due to a slight touching of piston and valve)
But does anybody know why there would be so much smoke?
My first thought would be i'm a k**b and ive cracked a piston, but there was no real sound or friction when i turned it by hand?
Any ideas would be welcome as i've had it for 5 months and its only been on the road for half that!!!!

the noise v unlikely to be mechanical contact, sounds like pump timing is out, this would account for diesel knock and excessive smoke.

Depends how much smoke, mine did smoke for a week or two after replacing the head. More than usual to start with then slowly got better after a week.

        What is diesel knock?

Diesel Knock is a bit like the noise made when a petrol engine runs on due to the ignition timing being too far advanced. It's basically an overly agressive combustion cycle causing a larger than average noise and firing the pistons at the wrong time.

I would reckon you have the timing too far advanced, however you would tend to get the smoke more if it is too far retarded. Probably only 1 tooth out on the belt, it's very easy to make that mistake.

Check timing first, if that fails have alook at your injectors.
I have just spent eight weeks rummaging around in the bottom end to solve a knocking noise and black smoke problem, turned out to be blocked injector nozzles. I've just replaced my head also.
But go through the timing first.

Don't assume the worst straight off!

            cheers

              timing

I'll be having a bash at it first thing.......
So if it's only one tooth out...i know this must sound daft, but is it just a case of taking the belt on an off untill you get it right? or is there a way of moving one wheel at a time to mark it up and having the other wheels stay put??
I always assume the worst first.....then what ever else happens does'nt seem too bad!!

the camshaft and crank dont move, with these lined up fit it on these first, hold the diesel pump pulley in position while you slide the belt on, tension it, job done

Just to add to that, once it's tensioned, turn it over a few times by hand to settle it. Then check again.

First time I did it it took 14 times on and off until I got it right.

                  Cheers

Great news. Great feeling isn't it when it all comes together.

                      Glad you got it sorted.
