sounds like the pistons are hitting the valves, hope you turned by hand and not on the key

          loud

The head is on and the beast is running! BUT!! its very loud sounds as if its still knocking slightly? is there any way of ajusting the timing without removing all the fans and belts?
Oh and there is lots of smoke coming out of her now??

it is essential that the timing marks are lined up exactly and the belt is properly tensioned, use a spanner to turn engine over by hand and re-aligne the marks before fitting the timing cover

There are different thicknesses in gaskets. The wrong gasket will not give the clearance needed or even too much if thicker than needed.I'n not certain about this but a measurement of how much the pistons sit above the block determines the gasket that should be used. The gaskets come in about 4 thicknesses.Anyone confirm this?

A tip on timing belt install -

Have the Crankshaft one tooth anticlockwise when installing belt.Once belt is on release the tensioner and turn the crankshaft slightly clockwise to allign the timing mark. Then tighten the tensioner bolt. This takes up the slack in the short length of belt between crankshaft and pump sprocket.I have done this myself and it works. If all timing marks are alligned at the start then pump sprocket is almost always one tooth out.
Always recheck timing marks by turning crankshaft at least one full turn by hand after belt is installed.

this is correct, applies if the head has been skimmed
