  • Auto box concern

    Hi,

Does anyone have experience with the auto transmission on a 2.4 LN130 surf?

Mine's a 92 2nd Gen, had the top end of the engine overhauled last year, been sweet for ages but now all of a sudden there's a rumbling coming through the central tunnel when the car is in park or drive, it is intermittant but seems to be getting worse, I can only discribe it as sounding like a slipping clutch that is trying to bite, it comes in when braking at low speeds and bizzarely when turning right but not when turning left, I've searched the threads and not found anything similar but I just thought I'd try you guys before I flush the transmission or it goes into the garage.

Car has done 150,000km and not seen any heavy off road action.

    Any help welcome

    Andy

Not when it's in Park though?

Thanks guys, going to take her to midland automatic transmissions this avo, I hear what your saying about CV joints but my local garage has looked at thiose ans said they were fine, not perfect but definitely servicable, maybe I'm really, really lucky and have an auto box issue and a cv joint problem, lucky me

I'll post more info when I get the results of the diagnosis. £75 + VAT just to find out what's wrong!

I prayed for the first time in years last night

Could it be a cracked flex plate like mine? I wouldn't say it sounded like a slipping clutch, but then I wouldn't have said a slipping clutch made a noise. Sounds more like something metal rubbing the blades of the fan, but only there at certain revs. In my cas about 1200 to 1800 at first, but now there at tick over, goes at about 1200 and comes back at about 1500 to 2000.

            Well,

I took her into the auto gearbox specialists yesterday they did a full diagnostic on the box and found it to be in perfect working order and said t's report really did look very good for such an old car, however it's missing a gearbox mount on one side and the other side is perished to a point where it will probably fall out soon, hence the rumble.

New mountings on order from milners, hopefully have her back on the road by friday

so, if you hear a rumble in your box, and you don't know what to do..., check your gearbox mounts

            Cheers lads
