  • Turbo mounting studs... any ideas?

When i bought my LN130 i noticed that the 4 studs that attach the turbo body to the exhaust manifold only had 3 nuts on them! There didn't seem to be any noticeable pressure leakage when revving so i just let sleeping dogs lie...

...however, after changing the head and upsetting all of those nicely corroded/settled joints and gaskets, there is a very noticeable and audible pressure loss. When driving it sounds like an old Belarus tractor is in front of the steering wheel!

So the studs are M10 i think, but it's difficult to tell as they are so corroded, and a previous owner has apparently stripped the first two turns of the threads.

Any ideas on how best to get a nut on here? Take turbo off and use a die? Attack it with WD40 and a wire brush? Leave it and buy some earplugs?

I throw myself on the mercy of the forum... :-)

BTW, it's the front, right hand nut as viewed from the driver's seat. Well it would be if the bonnet and turbo weren't in the way!
No, i haven't rescued any mountains this week!

M10? I doubt that. It's pi$$ing with rain here, so I'm not going to look at mine to check. I'd have thought they'd be M6 or M8 at the most.

    But I may be wrong...

Take the Turbo off, then replace the studs (all 4 if they've been butchered).

you'll have fun taking the turbo off.It the bolts are the same as the 3.0l then they are 14mm.They can be absolute sods to get off tho.Give them a ruddy good lubing first and then try them.
also use the Hex shape sockets on them and not the star shape ones as they will chew the bolts/studs/nuts up

Turbo has been off recently, only a week or so ago (head swapped for a non-cracked one). Wasn't too bad, although there were a motley collection of nuts and bolts holding that whole region together...

They are big studs, and an M10 is a good fit, or at least it would be if the threads still existed.

How would i go about removing the studs? Weld a nut on and unscrew?

Just to be clear, these are the four studs coming out of the exhaust manifold that the turbo sits on.

Keep the ideas coming guys! All help greatly appreciated!
