  • Changing a radiator and door mirror

thinking of attempting to change the radiator on my 2.4 1991 auto surf. is it a difficult job? seeing as my instruction book is in Japanese, I have nothing to go by! That's something else, anyone know where you can get a ###### English manual? there are enough surfs on the road, I would have thought someone would have printed one!

Also how the hell are you supposed to undo those 3 screws under the door mirror to get it off. they are stuck fast, and the door panel protrudes enough so you can't get straight on with a screwdriver. Is there a special tool to do this? any pointers on any of this will be much appreciated! Sorry if this has all been asked before, but I am a complete newbie to 4x4's, I'm more used to classic VW campers

The radiator itself is only held on by four bolts. You will need to remove the fan shroud first (four bolts onto radiator and two bolts holding the two halfs together).

AS for the mirror. All I can remember is removing the door card for some reason, it's been quite a few years since I stopped the mirror smashers, so I'm sorry but that's the only part of the job I can remember.

Thanks guys! I,ve heard before aftermarket rads don't last long, guess I had better save up for a toyota one for when this one I'm putting in goes.
As for the mirror, My guess is you have to take the door card off to get to the electric part of it, i.e. the black wire that runs from it.

thanks for the offer stormforce, but i've just bought one off ebay, it's being delivered in a couple of days, otherwise I would have had it off you. (mind you if this one turns out to be kak, then I'll take you up on it). I don't suppose though you have a good rear window motor do you? yes I need one of those too. I've already taken the old rad out in prep for the new one.

That was something to learn by. (Note to self. in future make sure you unbolt fan before trying to take off radiator shroud!) took me ages to figure that out.

Ok sounds very reasonable, I,ve left a reply on the parts thread, as I'm after something else too. Hope to hear from you soon. Many thanks for your help.

Mirror fairly easy - just had mine done

CAREFULLY remove the plastic traingle on the inside of the door (clip snaps due to age). If your lucky there will be enough slack on the wire for you to gently ease the connector out of the door. If not, then yes doorcard off.

Thanks for that. Just done the mirror. Now the replacement one was the chrome one that looked identical to my old one, BUT the white plug was slightly different! The new one was a skinny plug, and the old one was a fatter one. The wire colours were the same, so all I did was cut off the plugs and swop them over, rejoining them matching the wire colours. Has any one else done this? And will this be ok does anyone know? I haven't put the battery's back yet, so hoping to get a reply before I blow a fuse!

It should be ok.I've sold alternators with the same colour wiring but different plugs so i cut about 4" of wire from the plug so that the buyer can join to his original wiring
