Have just bought my first 2.4td surf auto and am having a problem with the fuel. I have to prime the fuel filter manually before I can start it, is this a common problem? Any suggestions as to what it could be as I am stumped?
Also it has 2 batterys on and I believe one is faulty is there anyway of testing them individually?
    Thanks

go to a battery place and ask them to test them and get the faulty one changed asap cos if one is trashed it will ruin the other one too. you are probably best replacing them both together, expensive but worth it in the long run (unless one is new )

As for priming the pump, no that's not normal sounds like you have a loose hose or a hole in something. have a really good look at all the pipes in and out also round the injectors. have you noticed any fuel leakage? it might be a good idea to clean up the fuel pump and around, carefully, and run it to look for leaks. you don't say if you have a mechanical or efi pump. If you have an efi the top seal is easy enough for replace with parts from rough trax, if its mechanical then don't bother its a pain in the ass and unless your a diesel pump specialist or very talented you will end up having to take it off and getting it bench tested, which is costly.

good luck and hopefully this was of some use

EDIT: just had another thought make sure you check the connections to the fuel filter too, have you changed it recently? don't forget to check the water drainage at the bottom is fitted correctly.

if its not a hose then check the tank breather,it may be blocked causing a vacum in the tank and therefore sucking the diesel back to the tank when its not running.there is a one way valve in the primer head maybe over time is deteriorated and no longer working properly, unfortunately you cannot buy these on there own you will need a new filter head.

Just to add to Surfenstein's post, (if possible) ya could try parking it overnight (facing down hill) could confirm the fuel filter heads at fault (Fuel not returning)
if it starts in the morning ...
Good luck in seeking a second hand filter head !!
        Hope that helps

        There's always a Payback .... Don't know where n won't know when tho !!!!
