  • no turbo light,a little guttless??

    hi
i just purchased me 2nd surf in 3 months as the first one was a bit of a heap.i have now bought a 1991 h reg ssr ltd, immaculate condition with 40,000 miles on it.just one question...the turbo light does not come on at all when engine is running, only when i first turn the ignition on.when driving i can hear the turbo whistle, and a noise that sounds like the police are coming up behind me,but no real significant boost.it dont kick down like my last surf did.its guttless and struggles to pick up speed uphill.any help is much appreciated.also,is the kickdown adjustable??

    cheers for looking
hope someone has a suggestion, going back to dealer anyway but just thought id get some ammo

follow all the vacuum hoses around to look for leaks or splits, its usually this, helps to look at another one to check all the hoses are in the correct places.

then pull the intake pipes and check the turbo spins free but not loose, and check the pipes for blockages/splits.

The air pressure sensor could be knackered, should be on the intake somewhere.

otherwise take it back and ask to compare it with another one for power.

A mechanic would have charged a fortune for that and still not found the problem. It certainly pays to be a member of this and other sites (http://www.toyotasurf.asn.au/forum/index.php) like it.One little hose does make a difference.

I had Exactly the same problem a while ago after changing the Fuel Filter on the Nearside the Turbo light stopped coming on and there was a big difference in performance and very slow going up hill !!! I thought the Turbo had gone but there were no oil leaks and the Turbo still turned . Took it to a local Specialist / performance Garage and he thought the Turbo had almost certainly gone !!!and that all they could do was replace it approx £500.00.
I decided to get a second opinion and called an old Guy at a small Garage and although he had never worked on a Toyota he advised me to check all the pipes and Fuel / Air sensors First. I found Exactly the same thing a small black rubber pipe had come off a Fuel Regulate / Sensor on the Nearside near the Fuel Filter - Replaced and worked perfect . I wonder if the Specialist Garage would have found the pipe disconnected and still replaced the Turbo or even just put the pipe on and cleaned the Turbo up - Thanks very much Sir happy NEW Turbo !!!

Thats why I prefer backstreet garages and guys on their own. They have a reputation to build and none of the budget for advertising. And as mechanics they have forgotten more than the chimps who work in the main dealers could ever learn.

                    Cheers

OK, iz the green turbo light ment to be on with ignition and stay on when the engine iz running if so I got a problem my green light cumz on with ignition but iz off when running. It also lacks power on hills, we are talking kickdown and scream to keep up or chug and tailback It gets worse, my whistle haz now been replaced with a new noise when any load iz on but not when on a flat road crusing, it's a louder warble trimering sort of noise

Iz it new turbo time, if so where's the best place for parts

many thanks for any help guys

Turbo light? What turbo light? I've never seen a light come on on mine especially green, does this mean my Surf can go even faster???

Can anyone show / tell me where abouts on the dash it lives?

                        Cheers, Damian.

3.0 doesn't have one (a turbo light) so don't worry about it. Only on the 2.4,

                          Cheers

                              That's a relief, I already know that the 4WD light doesn't work!
