thanks guys think for the time being i think im going to get a cheap cone filter to replace the airbox and see what happens if i get the results im looking for then i can refine

unless any one has a sure fire way of getting back to better power and fuel economy as i had with the split hose

I have a stanley knife you can have for a small donation to the forum!! all you need to do is insert it in to the new hose and your away!!

nice one had thought about it but after being warned of the potential big bill should somthing get sucked through the turbo went and bought the replacement hose at £40 theres no way im butchering it

thought it would be a nice simple job to disconnect the airbox and bolt on a cone filter of some sort and hey presto power and fuel economy back but obviously not

any other ideas welcome would i gain much by adding a side vent or side bonnet scoop to get some cooler air in there

ps i will be donating to the forum but will have to wait until payday skint at the moment

do you think this would give alot of roar has foam filter which i believe will increase flow

anyone know the diameter of the pipe on the turbo side of the airbox off the top of there head

Might be worthwhile asking Nev what type he uses. I seem to remember that he has some form of foam filter which fits in the standard box. That would most likely be your best compromise.

I doubt you'll see much change in economy whatever you do TBH. Most of the problem lies in the fact that it weighs nigh-on 2 tons, and is as aerodynamically efficient as Matt F after a week locked in maccy Ds.

Best things to try are pump tyres to high end of pressure range, use road tyres, use a lighter foot when accelerating, make sure the truck is properly serviced etc.

Air is approx 10% denser at 15 degrees C than it is a 35 degrees C, and its a hell of a lot hotter than that under the bonnet of a Surf, so lets assume 20%. Conservatively speaking, unless you can flow 20% more air through the new filter, then you'll get sod all gain, just a £50 lighter wallet and a lot more noise.

thanks apache can you shed any light on why i had more pick up and better economy with the split on the pipe leading the turbo or was this just coincidense

Possibly just coincidence mate.

I had a split in the pipe that goes across the top of the engine for a few weeks, and the economy was worse. Your improvement was probably just down the the driving style / type of journey.

Dont get me wrong. There are sound reasons why a better flowing filter / much shorter pipe run might give you a tiny improvement in mpg, but the air MUST be cold or you're just wasting your time.

unlikley to be clogged as it has just been changed along with oil and filter and fuel filter it was the mechanic that pointed out the spilt literally split about 70% around the turbo housing flange

gunna take the lid off the airbox and check its seated correctly and look at ways of getting cold air into the airbox

would a flexi hose to the front grill work or is this just going to baffle airflow

Must admit, I thought that idea was rather sound. He did get some bitching from some of the Oz bunch over that though. I liked it personally.
