A new head, usually. Youll be extremely lucky if it's the gasket alone.

Deep dish socket for the injectors (21mm I think) and a long thin 14mm socket for the head bolts.(I had to turn the socket I bought for the job down about 3mm on the lathe to get clearance.)

Some help getting the head out of the engine bay. (I welded up some angle iron to attatch to the lifting points so we didn't have to lean over the engine to pick it up.)

Angle gauge as the head bolts have to be rotated 90 degrees or something after initial torque down. (i made some out of cardbord that the extension bar went through)

      Small hands and patience.

Hope it is just the gasket but sadly I think Matt is right

      Rob.

if the head has gone (if its a 2.4) as well as the gasket or even if it hasnt i would fit a 2.8 head (fully equiped)on as this was toyota's answer to solving this flaw you also might get more power as well!

Thanks for all the advise. Unfortunatly you were right and I was not lucky. The head is cracked. Anyone know the best/cheapest place to get a new head? Will a 2.8 head fit a 2.4 surf exactly with no modifications required?

Your best bet is to find someone breaking a 2.4 that has the newer head on it.

Buying new is going to cost around £600 - £700 + fitting.

            Rob.

(I got mine from the engine co - see ad at top of screen.)

i think it was barry at rough trax that told me about the 2.8 heads fitting on the 2.4

So far Milners seem to be the cheapest. Thanks guys for all your advise. Yet again the forum is invaluable.

I'm not too happy with Milners or Roughtrax at the moment but.....

Has anybody here actually fitted a Milners head (or Roughtrax) and had problems ?

Surely they're all using the same casting ?

                        Rob.
