hey guys. my starter stoped starting. so i went through the troubleshooting and decided its the starter it self. now to get the son of a blitch out.it took me two hours about 8 beers 2 spliffs alot of swearing and a few bruised knuckles. so once i found everything, took it out (three times all together), and reinstalled it got alot easier. i will also say a good set of tools is needed.i bought a 242 piece socket set for 100 bucks canadian. this is my recommended process. disconnect battery. starter comes out from bottom of truck by the way. two bolts are holding it onto the bell housing.actually before i forget, remove the tranny dipstick first(and i mean the whole assembly not just the dipstick.its held on by two bolts easy to find and get to. once they're out just pull the unit out. two first one i recommend loosening is the one on top of the bell housing.if you picture a clock it is at the 2oclock position on the starter if looking at the front of truck(hope this makes sense to you, easier to picture it than say). it took a about two feet of socket extensions and and a universal bit fitted to the socket 17mm. you might need someone up top to line you up. take this bolt right out. the next one is closer to the passenger wheel.roughly the 6 or 7 oclock position. this will require a 17mm socket and a back up wrench as this one has a nut. the first one bolts through the bell housing right into the starter. so you should now be able to hang the starter from the two wiring connections you now need to disconnect. one is a male female type plug which you need to lift a tab up to pull apart. a pain in my ass due to lack of room and big hands. damn japanese. anyways the other is a bolt which is covered by a small rubber boot. pull back boot and remove nut. cant remember what size is. and pull off connection. starter can now be painfully removed by turning, swearing, pulling and more swearing. looks like it wont fit but it does. you now see why dipstick had to come out.
so the reason my starter was broke was because A. the contacts were worn
and B. the clutch assembly had seized up. water had gotten in. which i later realized was my fault. i drove down(fast) nose first down a boat launch into the ocean. a week later it didnt start. so wether or not the contacts did fail, they were messed up and i replaced them. cheap fix since it was already out.
now my question to you is.......should there be a seal between starter and bell housing? seems weird for water to get in there.
hope i've helped at least one guy/gal out there.
thanks.
