  • HELP, revving too high

Hi guys. My 93 2.4td ssr-x is running fine after its head replacement and engine recondition apart from one thing. At 70mph it is doing 3500RPM. It should only be doing around 2500RPM. This is obviously using up a lot of diesel on motorway journeys. I know its not the O/D system , thats kicking in and out ok, its also hitting all of its gears ok. Its going back to the dealer today but the first place they sent it to doesn't know what the problem is so its going elsewhere. Any suggestions people, even its expensive (i'm not paying ha ha)
    Thanks guys

This is probably really stupid however here goes.

They didn't change anything else like the rear diff or the wheels. If the Gearbox is working fine and the engine is running well then the only things that could be causing it to rev higher (thats if the torque converter is doing it's job properly would be that the wheels are travelling round less for the same revs.

Alternatively, have they got all the electrics connected up so that the sensor that runs the rev counter is doing the proper job. If you are sure that the revs are correct then I can't think of anything other than gearbox, wheels or diffs.

    Cheers

This is a weird one.Are you sure it"s 3500 RPM?Is the tacho working properly? Can you actually notice the higher RPM from the sound of engine?

It would take a drastic change in gearing or tyres to increase revs by 1000 RPM.

I'm not sure, does the Torque converter lock up on the Surf. If not it may be failing to lock up allowing more slippage and therfore more revs.

Alternatively are you sure that the gearbox is going into all the gears. The Surf is a 3 speed plus overdrive, maybe what you think is overdrive is actually 3rd. Could be a throttle position problem forcing kickdown all the time.

        Cheers

I have never liked autos and know little about them but have you checked transmission fluid. If it is slipping as Andy suggests maybe this is the problem.Just guessing but if nobody else has the answer then it's better than nothing.

Mine does 3000rpm at 70 mph aswell. But have big wheels and a large set of surfboard roofbars.

Mine is actually doing 68 MPH at 3000 rpm - measured on the GPS. 80mph is around 3400rpm. I'm Running 31 inch tyres on mine which has lowered the revs somewhat from the 265/70s I had on before not sure by how much though. Could probably work it out as their diameter is 29.6 inches (or would have been before the tread wore out.

Blimey - it's not just me then!

I've just driven my new '92 2.4 SSRX Auto down the M3, and at 120Km/h (no speedo conversion yet) the engine was going at a little over 4000 revs. It also sounds very overrevved, so its not just the dial.

It feels as though there should be a top gear that isn't being engaged, but ive just read here that the Surf is only 3 speed + overdrive.

Should I perhaps manually switch the overdrive on over a certain speed?

The warning light (?) on the dash panel doesn't indicate that the O/D is off...?The (badly translated) manual does recommend O/D off and ECT on for long uphill drags. That would give you the O/D off light and the Pwr/ECT light on the dash. It would also give you those revs at 70mph...

The overdrive is definitely kicking in on the gearbox...?

My kickdown was a little flaky, until I got the auto box flushed and the filter cleaned... much better now. 70mph comes up at 2,800rpm with the O/D engaged (dash light off).
