  • Electronic shocks question.....

Hi there, sorry to ask this but I'm a bit confused! I have to order a rear shock (probably go for a pair I suppose) for my Surf which is leaking fluid, but I'm a long way away from the car so can't inspect it. I have a 1992 SSRX, 2.4 - are the rear shocks electronic or is that just the front ones? I used to know the answer to this at one point, could have sworn it was only one end worked on the switch but on ebay etc I can see front and rear electronic ones for my year of car.

If they are electronic at the back, are there after market ones available that also work with the switch, or do I have to go with the Toyota ones, in which case £108 a pop from Roughtrax? I know a lot of people go straight for the uprated non electronic ones, but I like to be able to flick the switch for badly maintained roads!

    Many thanks

I dont think there's any aftermarket ones which work with the fitted system, though there are some expensive adjustables made by Rancho. Have you checked Toyota themselves for a price? Sometimes they are reasonable.

TOYOTA ones are around £190 each. Go for EXPLORER PROCOMP ES 9000 on the rear & ES3000 on the front. JOBS DONE!

Thanks for all the input. I have ordered the original ones from Roughtrax, £108 each plus vat. Toyota quoted me £129 each.

Just decided to go for the original ones so the electronic circuit worked as I do use both settings.

When I bought the car I'm sure I was told that the norm/hard switch only made a difference to either the front or back, am I now right in saying that all 4 shocks are switched?

The rear ones most definately are!

Edit: Thinking about it so are the fronts, as i remember pulling the old ones off Biosurf's truck when we did the lift!!

And then within days / weeks you will see streaks of rust as they start to bio-degrade

The dash switch should work all 4 shocks.
