  • Strange sound from under engine

    Hi All

    Any suggestions gratefully recieved...

Have got a "clattering" sound coming from under the engine, seems to be around the sump/transmission area. Sounds like metal catching.

The speed of the tapping quickens with the engine and seems to die down at about 2500RPM.

Isn't there when engine first runs in morning but develops after about a mile and gradually gets worse throughout the day.

Been underneath thismorning but can't see anything catching/touching

    Idea's?

    Cheers

    Joe

best thing to do is get it warm and rev the engine whilst vehicle is stationary,if its not clattering then i would look at cv joints, prop ujs, front arbs, and exhaust.if it still clatters whilst stationary then i would say propably engine, whats the oil pressure like, when was the oil and filter last changed.

Oil changed couple of weeks ago, filters at the same time.

Makes no difference whether in N or D, moving or not.

Oil pressure fine. - Clattering only happens after a few miles and engine is warm??

Do I need to be worried as cannot afford garage bill yet! But, do need to use the truck for work!

Was the noise there before you changed the oil? I'm thinking you may have put oil in that's too thin.

are you sure its bottom end ,it could be the shims on the cam, when the oils cold its quite thick but as the oil warms up it becomes thinner if that makes sense.so it could be a worn shim or two.or as sancho said did you re fill with the correct viscosity oil.??? are all the heat shield tight around the turbo and exhaust.things tend to expand when hot so could be a bolt that just needs nipping up.give them a good belt with your hand and make sure.

You say that you cannot afford a garage bill at the moment, but how much would it cost to have a mechanic diagnose the problem verses leaving it and have the engine blow up on you?

At least you would know if it is terminal, or even if you are causing more damage by using the Surf.
Mine WAS a 150 bhp V6 and ran on PETROL

Oil was part of kit supplied by Milners?? No it wasn't there before the service but engine wasn't run for about a year before the service... Sound developed about 100 miles after service. Pretty sure its bottom but I may be wrong
