problems with starting - any help

I've got a 2.4 SSRX-G, and all of a sudden im having trouble starting it,it had new batteries about 18 mths ago. a mate put a volt meter on the batteries and their showing about 13.5V on each battery and he's saying that my altenater could be on the way out, any help or information would be really appriecated.

sometimes it starts and other times you turn the key and it tries until the battery's seem like their flat.

Might be glow plugs. if you have changed then have you blown 80amp glow plug fuse.

Or the glow plug relay

When you say trouble starting, do you mean slow turning or normal turning but won't fire?

also have you just changed the filter recently,, check that for leaks and are you starting to use veggie ????

Are you sure thats on each battery? they are linked together you know.

I thought that without the engine running the batts should show just over 12V, and with running around 13.5 - 14.5 ?

What is actually happening when you try to start ?
