  • Something terrible happened!!

Oh dear, I was driving home, I thought she was running a bit rough, the next thing I know there is a loud kind of whizzing sound then I lose all my drive, then the engine stalls, could my T-Belt have broken? there was no red light or anything, it sounded like something definately snapped, anything happened like this to any of you guys? is it bad?

Possibly turbo related. Can you start the engine?

If you ignore the wizzing noise, does it sound the same as it did before when you turn it over?
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

If you think the timing belt broke then the last thing you want to do is try and start it.

Sounds like your timing belt has snapped. Undo the top bolts on the housing & prize the cover forward...Hold your breath & pray as you prize it forward.
If it has gone your in for an expensive rebuild especially if you have been trying to start it since. Everytime you turn over the engine think of it as another valve bent & possibly a big chunk out of the top of your pistons.

All the damage will have been done just after the belt snapped (if that's what happened).

Yeah it was the timing belt, dammit, now I have the decision wether to repair it or not, just put new tyres on it too, I really cant be bothered to have to get another car, re-insure it blah blah, only to probably find something different goes wrong with it in six months, so I told the bloke at the garage to fix it, but I can change my mind as long as I call by 10 monday morning, the estimate for a worst case scenario was £994, they just had a brief look on friday for the estimate, and I can borrow their courtesy car, I think I'll just let them do it, I know its probably foolhardy, but any car costs, and in 34 years of driving this is the first time I've ever had a major fix done, I can usually tell if a car is on its way out and get rid of it before the hammer falls, I actually knew there was something amiss driving it home, and I got 200 yards from my house before she gave up the ghost, so I got my poor husband and son to push her home, it nearly killed them!

The biggest bottomer is, there is going to be snow.. and I havnt got my Surf!!!

It might only be a couple of valves and the labour in removing the head and putting new valves in, dosn't have to be fatal, a lot depends on how fast the motor was reving when it let go.

If bills start to over £1000, sell it for spares and buy a nice 3.0
