  • 12 mpg ?

my surf 2.4 ln130 is doing 310km on a full tank of diesel ,which i get to around 12 mpg ? ,now i am assuming the trip meter will be reading in kms?it runs fine always starts first time just useless on fuel any ideas?

If the speedometer has both miles and km on it, it's simply had a new face put on it and the trip meter/odometer will probably still read kms. In that case, that's a low figure. However if there's only one set of numbers on the speedo, it's had the complete conversion to miles done and the odometer/trip meter should be reading miles. Still pretty low but not so dire.

As above you need to confirm the speedo hasn't been converted to read MPH. Best way to confirm this is reset the odometer and then drive a known distance in miles and check what the odo is reading when you get to destination.

310km on 55 litres would be 16MPG, not 12. Are you putting a whole 55 in there anyway? You need to fill it right up, reset the odo, drive it for a few days, then fill it back up and see how many litres you used going that distance.

Whatever, 16 MPG is still pretty dire. Unless you're doing stop/start driving in town all day you should be getting at least low 20's. Have you changed the air filter lately or run any injector cleaner through the fuel system. I'd try both of those first, then see if there is any difference. If not, then you may have a problem. Is it very smokey when running, which could indicate an over rich mixture (i.e. possibly worn injectors)

If it turns out it has had the full conversion to miles done (don't know how common it is, mine has it) then 310 miles on 55 litres is nearly 26mpg - not bad at all (google makes these sums easier...)

thx for the help guys ,310 is the best its done over the 3 tank fulls and it only did 310 before it ran out and stopped .the 2 tanks before did around the 280 mark ,ive got kmph and mph on the clocks so it looks like it is kms,the air cleaner is discoloured but ive seen alot worse.on start up from cold its dark grey/black smoke for around 100 yds or so ,but i have noticed black smoke when driveing out of bends etc...also looks like someone has fitted a smaller bore exhaust on from the center back and its an auto.id be happy with 20mpg but its just to hard to run as it is,ive read on hear about useing atf in the filter?whats all that about?is it putting gearbox oil in the fuel filter?

change the fuel filter, pour a good dose of Redex into new one before fitting and it should give the injectors a good clean out.

I think before you do anything else you should check for definite that your milometer is reading in Kilometers not miles. Find a stretch of road of a known length (say about 5 miles). Zero the trip meter then drive the route. If your milometer shows 5 then it's correct. If it shows around 8 then it's still reading in kilometers. As said, if you can get 310 miles out of a full tank then you are doing well, whereas 15-16 mpg is really crap unless it's a V6 petrol.

                    maybe me too

i am watching this thread with interest to see the outcome as i think my 2.4 may be heading the same way , the other week on here i reported that new filters etc had taken me from 18 to 23 mpg but going by my gauge now im going downhill again its getting really thirsty, how can a diesel be thirsty but run sweet as a nut ??

Try resetting the ECU (disconnect the batteries for half an hour). I have no idea how it works, but it may have 'got used to' how things were and is now overfuelling. That would make it run lovely but get through the fuel fast.

Even more stupid, make sure the fuel filter you fitted hasn't started leaking....
