Hi peeps I'm new here, have owned several 4x4's over the years but all Jeep and all petrol, this is my first TD. so I have a couple of questions.

    1. Noticed yesterday that when I start up the Motor the is smoke coming out from the back of the turbo. And it seems to go away as the engine warms up . . is this normal?

    2. Also whilst looking under there (with the engine running) notice that the Aircon compressor Belt is incredibly loose. . . How can I tighten it.

Last but not least have had the car for 2 weeks now and seems to drive fine, done motorway and town driving and cant fault it . . .BUT . .! Yesterday I noticed the Temp gauge behaving in a odd manner . .I kept creping up towards really hot and soon as I slowed down it would return to half way, within seconds, I pulled over a couple of time looked in the engine bay and there was no water bubbling and no steam either and yes the is plenty water in there.
Also noticed that when going Uphill the temp gauge would read high temp again and as soon as was back on a flat surface it would return to half way....

Any ideas as what's going on???

    Cheers

1/ could possibly be the gasket

2/The aircon belt is easy enough to tighten up.Just have a look to see where the tensioner is and adjust.

3/I would give the truck a bl00dy good service oil, coolant, all belts and filters and new rad cap and thermostat and see how it runs after that.
Fill the fuel filter with redex or atf before re-fitting to give the injectors a good clean through

      1. Rocker cover gasket?

      2. What Rich said.

      3. Check your viscous fan is working. Obviously, check the belts. Change your ATF.

Any chance you're looking at the oil gauge instead of the temp? If so, read this
