  • Too much sooty exhaust with 2.4?

We have this stupid "Air Care" scam here where I live and I failed because my exhaust emissions were too smoky.Have had the head done with all new valves a few months back so a cracked head isn't the problem. Anyone have this problem and then remedied it? Truck runs good with plenty of guts....simply belches out smoke when accelerating.Any suggestions would help. Thanks

Do a search for 'EGR valve'.

i blocked my egr a few months ago but it didn't make much difference to the smoke on accelerating. I've tried redex and a few other cleaner and injector treatments to no avail. The only thing that has worked so far is to fit a shut off valve in the sensing line to the turbo boost sensor - there is a lot of info on the Oz forum.
They seem to think that the smoke and associated overfuelling is due to the sensor loosing its flexibility over time. In stead of producing a 0-4 volt signal as the boost pressure increases, it puts out full voltage and the extra fuel goes straight up to maximum.
This mod results in a little less power but i have noticed that there is very little smoke emitted and i appear to have lost my night time white emmissions also. I have temporarily placed the shut off valve in the cab on the grab rail so that I can turn the boost back on when I need it and, because the turbo is already pushing in loads of air by this time, I don't get the smoke.
Ive only been trying this for a couple of days but I think that my MPG is improving too - I'm going to top up the tank again tomorrow, this should show me if I've improved on my average of 21.5mpg

Hey that's good info...To simply pass this silly test of my emissions I'll simply disconnect the sensor that provides more fuel when the turbo boost kicks in. There won't be any extra fuel therefore no smoke...No power either but I'll simply reconnect it after the test is complete.Probem solved....I hope. Thanks

It could be that under acceleration, the extra exhaust gases are blowing all the soot out of the exhaust. This used to be a common MOT failure on diesels that had been driven carefully all year. The easy way to cure it is to turn the O/D off and drive it a mile or two on the rev limiter to blow it all through. You will need to turn the O/D off or you will be doing about 90mph.

We used to get them all the time when someone thought they needed a new injection pump and new injectors on their low mileage car that had never been driven over 30 mph. We used to drive it up the bypass like we'd nicked it then take it straight in for the MOT. They would pass with flying colours.
