  • Whats Up??

I've recently had this feeling that when i put the gas pedal down the engine/turbo is spinning but not accelerating. it tends to catch up after a few brief seconds. Someone suggested the clutch may be on its way out, or it feels like the turbo isn't keeping compression. its annoying though as when i'm climbing hills i often need to change down a gear to get any real speed.
Please no Flux Capacitor suggestions, I can't get her to 88mph anyway, flux or not.
    Hope someone can help.

Interesting that mine was starting to exhibit that tendancy on an Auto, It's all gone away thanks to repairing a split in the exhaust between the main silencer and the resonator box.

Probably not what you are experiencing though.

One way to check the clutch.

Start the engine, put in gear, let your foot off the clutch slowly with the handbrake on. The engine should stall or pull the car forward (if the handbrake is no good). If the engine keeps spinning at idling or even when revving it a bit then your clutch is toast.

Could be one of the following.

    1. Oil contamination (rear crankshaft or front gearbox oil seals)
    2. Clutch release bearing sticking on the shaft (quite common if you go off road).
    3. Clutch face worn.
    4. Flywheel face worn.

If it is not that then there may be a vacuum leak somewhere, check all the thin pipes running around the engine bay, make sure they are connected to something and that they don't have any leaks. Also check the two large pipes running to and from the turbo for any cracks and bad joints (loose clips etc).

    Hope that this helps.

    Cheers

If you put your foot down and there is a sudden increase in revs (look at tacho) then the clutch is on the way out.Mine is doing this.

Ive tried the clutch test that 'lucky' mentioned and the engine stalled. I have been having trouble with the clutch pedal sticking when i hold it down in traffic. Not sure whether the clutch isn't engaging properly. Seems to be worse in 4th gear aswell.
Additionally, I checked the turbo pipes and leads etc.. there does seem to be some oil running from the base of the turbo, which i assume is the shell shaped object left of the main engine. The oil hasn't significantly dropped so i'm not sure whether it is leaking or what.

Mine also stalls with that test. Also have problems with 5th or 4th gear when accelerating quickly.Trying to avoid steep climbs as well.New clutch for me after I get fuel pump back and reinstall. Now that's expensive.

You might want to go to a Diesel specialist and get the turbo output checked for boost unless you have a spare boost gauge knocking about.

Check the exhaust though, It's amazing the difference I've got in mine since I sealed the crack in the pipe just behind the main silencer. You couldn't hear any noise so it was only noticed when I was underneath sizing up for my underslung spare wheel. The car also starts better after a couple of days running. It seems that the damaged exhaust was also meaning that the engine couldn't exit the gasses fast enough and that the injectors were sooting up because of that.

It's just a thought though, still think it is probably the Turbo itself or a vacuum leak.

              Cheers
