If yours is a manual, then you are correct, the DM flywheel has probably given up the ghost.

Do a search on here, there's loads of info.
Do you know that, with a 50 character limit, it's

Might be worthwhile adding a little disclaimer after that. The apparently erratic search always seems to bite me in the jacksy when I 'suggest' using the search function.

Been there, had that happen to me. It might last quite a while yet, but eventually you will run out of drive, and the noises will get worse. You will find that a replacement solid flywheel and clutch kit from Milners or the like is a lot cheaper than a Toy DM flywheel. I now have a solid flywheel and cannot tell the difference.
The usual sources will tell you to get the end oilseal on the engine changed at the same time, its only a few extra pounds.
I had the work done for me, and was told that the new flywheel bolts in the kit were a load of cr*p, being too soft to take the correct torque, but pukkha Toy ones are easily available.

As I said, I had the work done for me. I'm used to landrovers where you can take stuff out through the cabin, but the thought of dropping (probably literally!) the gear/transfer box down and then getting it all back, and lined up, was too much to contemplate using ramps. I could have taken the engine out but that would have taken forever, there's so much stuff to disconnect.

I am led to believe there was some clearance issue between the front diff and the sump when the engine is tilted, he said he had to take the diff out.

Much as I like my Surf, it's a bu**er to work on compared to a Landy.

You will have to change the clutch as I believe the clutch is different on a solid flywheel. So if you get a free flywheel, try to get the clutch with it.
