  • Intermittent power loss problem

    Hi Guys,

I have had an intermittent problem with power loss on my 2.4 SSR-G. At the time it first showed up I had been running on a mix of WVO/diesel - the WVO being supplied from a local guy with a filtering set-up in a barn.

It first showed up pulling away from a junction as a loss of power and the check engine light coming on - pulling into a layby and going into neutral the light went out and re-engaging drive it pulled away fine.

At first I had visons of this being a transmission issue, however reading around on here suggests fuel starvation.

After the first time I stopped using veg for a month and had no problems. A few weeks ago I used some more of the WVO and within a few hours the symptoms were manifesting again.

One of the first things I checked was for a sucking noise on removing the filler cap - and sure enough there was just such a noise - so I drilled a 1.5mm hole through the cap, since then no further problem with a vacuum developing but the power loss problem is still there.

The problem doesn't occur all the time, it is most likely to happen why I try and accelarate hard - the truck feels a bit sluggish, turbo light is on revs climbing then suddenly the revs die back, turbo light goes out and red light pops on. Slowing down and letting the truck coast causes the red light to go out at which point I can accelarate carefully back to running speed.

As I said this doesn't happen every day, but my observations suggest it is more likely to happen now when it is a cold day - particularly if the truck is temperamental about starting.

From what I have read on here this sounds to be a sign of a blocked fuel filter and/or crap in the tank blocking the outlet. The fuel filter will be changed later this week when the truck goes in for MOT and some servicing.

However I have also noticed comments about loss of turbo pressure - can anyone add to this please?

One other thing as part of the service I am having the cam belt changed along with the ATF, Oil and coolant - now I have read about issues with the Surf being a bit awkward to get air out of the system - I have tried searching for burping the system but so far haven't located much info.

Can anyone offer advice or give a link to a thread covering this.

    Many thanks

    Dale

What mix of WVO to diesel are you using? You may need to reduce the ratio of WVO.

How many micron is the oil filtered to? If its not properly filtered or dewatered it will cause problems.
Try heating up a frying pan until its very hot then pour in a soup spoon of the oil into it. If it spits at all there is water present and I wouldn't use it in your tank.
If thats fine you could try running the same mix of diesel to oil bought form the supermarket as a test to see if the purity is an issue.

End of the day its likely the fuel filter if you havent changed it since using veg.

    Good luck

With WVO I tried to stay around 50-50. Before new veg oil started to cost more than diesel the truck was quite happy up to 70%.

Unfortunately I don't know the level of filtration on the waste oil - but I am suspicious that it was not as good as it should have been.

I haven't added any more veg for the last 2 weeks or so, so I think it is likely to be clogged filter and possibly residual crap, but I just wanted to get other opinions as when it comes to engines I am no expert.

I was told, the first few weeks of using veg oil (new or old) will drag up lots of shoite from the bottom of the tank. So after a couple of weeks it's time to change the filter which will become clogged with said shoite!
        Hope this helps

I think it's a simple case of the WVO you're buying being crap.

I'd change the fuel filter and stop putting that stuff in there.

That about sums it up in my opinion too.

Well, had the truck serviced a few weeks ago and filters replaced.

So far so good the probelm appears to have disappeared so it looks like clogged fuel filter was the culprit.
