could it be my injectors?

Hello,
This might be a stupid question...
I have a 1991 2.4 turbo diesel and had the cracked head replaced. Now its still running rough and am thinking it may be the injectors. There is a guy in town that can work on the injectors but only if they are mechanical injectors and not electrical. I have no idea. Any other ideas on whats going on? I've spent all the money I have an now I still have a Hilux that isn't great. It starts rough until its warm, at around 60kms/hr it seems to have troubles shifting unless I take the O/D off. It seems like its misfiring slightly even on the best of days and the exhaust smells a little like unburnt diesel.

The timing has been reset a few times on it. New cooling system, new head, new glow plugs, checked the batteries and fuses. I'm a little lost and there is no mechanic around my area to help out.

Yes , you have mechanical injectors . Get the EGR blanked off as this can cause the rough running you describe .

Also worth checking that when you replaced the head that the timing chain was replaced in the correct position. I understand it's not too difficult to get it a tooth out which would put your injector timing out of phase with the crankshaft revolutions and cause rough running.

Hey guys,
THanks, I'm not really too good at the DIY, but am slowly learning. I think the timing chain is back in the proper position. It was out a tooth or two before. Unless it can gradually go out, it should still be good. I'm also not too sure what blanking the EGR means? Is it worth my time taking the injectors out and getting them tested? I had a friend crack the lines and they said nothing seems to be wrong.

Have you checked the glow plug fuse and relay? Is it coming up to temperature quite fast? It may have trouble shifting if it runs cool because of a missing/stuck thermostat.

2.4 td with timing chain???

I thought all the 2lte 2.4td engines are belt driven and the chains are only on the 3.0litre lump...

I have a 2.4td Surf over in Pakistan for when I go over, I have driven it 1200KM on a day when it was 52 degrees Celsius!! thermostat had been removed and the viscous fan clutch was removed to have the fan running all the time, I had no problems with shifting gears, the engine temp was constantly around the halfway mark. (it took 2.5 tank fulls to do 1200KM)

Finally fixed!

Just wanted to update on the Hilux. It was the injectors. Two were shot so got a new set and she's running much better now!

Ya I went traveling for a bit and the truck sat in the parents garage for months. They started it for me but that's about it. Once the debt was paid from the traveling and the head fix I finally got to this and my truck is back!

Is it normal for the truck to push a bit of smoke when it's cold? It's been so long since it was running properly I can't remember...

All Turbo Diesel's will blow some smoke on start up.... n hard acceleration
As an apprentice (40+ years ago) I was always taught to start em up n let the motor warm up before moving off !!
Why not try it n see it it make any difference ....

There's always a Payback .... Don't know where n ya won't know when tho !!!!
